We should use any encounter with the "faithful" to talk them out of faith and into reason. http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/street-epistemology

After a session of sharing, sometimes I come away with my position being changed on an issue. Other times, I need to think it over for a few days or weeks before my position changes. Still other times, my position doesn't change. But because I now understand why the person thinks the way he/she does, that knowing helps me to live in harmony with the person even though I still disagree. When I'm doing advocacy work, I remember these things about myself and give the other person time to think, too. The most important thing isn't for us all to have carbon copy (showing my age??) thoughts, but to live together in the best harmony we can, despite ourselves.

Aw... I just have to tell you about a true story that I read many years ago. There was this young woman. Every time she cooked a roast, she prepped it by cutting off one end. When asked why, she said she did it because that's what her mom did. So, they asked the mom why she did it. The mom said that it was because that's what her mom always did. They asked the grandmother why she did it. The grandmother replied that it was because her roasting pan was too small. LOL. Just thing if this had gone on for 10 generations. The true reason would have been lost in history and people would have been set in their custom of cutting off the end of the roast. LOL!!

Sorry folks, I don't mean to come across the wrong way, but do you find it necessary to have a sign out on the table the indicates "Godless brunch"....? While I'm proud of my Atheist beliefs, I have no desire to advertise such beliefs while I'm just trying to have a sandwich and talk to like minded people. Please let me know if being labeled and being put on display is a prerequisite to joining you folks, if it is, I will politely decline.

Kevin elected to leave the meetup group; perhaps he will find greener pastures with something that is a better match for him.

I think you should use one of the Atheist "A" logos. Simple and clear to those looking for the group.

Rob, thanks, but respectfully you should read your initial post on this one. It does pretty much indicate that one should go elsewhere if.......etc. Don't get over burdened with explanation or semantics, it's pretty clear.

      1 · April 24, 2014

    • Secular C.

I've never considered explanations to be a burden, and I believe that sincerely open-minded, thoughtful people are more likely to welcome rather than reject clarifications.

well said. Can't come up with a response for that one, for some reason

      April 24, 2014

  • Trey R.

So you're saying, you don't want to show your Atheist Pride....Does that mean you don't want a t-shirt?

    2 · April 23, 2014

    • Jean M.

      <---wants a tee shirt...

I am thinking about seeing the Noah movie at the Muvico theatre downtown St. Pete after brunch in the afternoon. If anyone would like to go, you are welcome to join me.

    2 · March 20, 2014

    • Secular C.

So did anyone make it to the movie?

      March 30, 2014

    • Kim

      Not me.

  • Mark W.

I had a great time. Everyone was great and friendly. I look forward to the next one I can make and will bring my wife Debbie.

And the first one to call about gluten free options can add the info to the brunch's comments. If there's nothing gluten free to eat, have her come anyway. She can bring her own food like I do when that happens. It will get some awareness going so that more restaurants start offering gluten free and become educated about preventing cross-contamination.

Sorry I missed brunch today but, as mentioned earlier, was at a funeral today. I do have a question though: are we meeting Tuesday for Trivia night at Pete & Shorty's this week? I missed this last Tuesday so don't know what was decided. And haven't seen anything about it yet on the GB site.

    March 30, 2014

    • Kim

Sorry that you couldn't make it. Yay that there will be another one soon! Hope you can get to that one.

      March 30, 2014

  • Kim

Excellent! Plenty of room. There was even a specific menu just for gluten free! Great bunch of people. Very involved and interesting conversations.

Yes. Those are my Arnette's. Thank you.

Somebody left a pair of sunglasses at brunch. Trey, do they belong to you...or maybe to someone else? I have them and will bring them to the next brunch.

I will miss this Sunday's brunch. Is there a volunteer willing to bring the "Godless Brunch" sign along? Please let me know.

    March 27, 2014

    • Kim

I'll come get the sign. Email your address to me. Can I pick it up on Saturday? What time would you like me to come? If it's raining, I'll put it in a plastic bag.

      March 28, 2014

    • Kim

      And we'll miss you!

I have a funeral to go to - a long-time friend's Dad died recently and his funeral is Sunday, March 30, so won't be able to be there for the brunch.

    March 24, 2014

    • Jean M.

Oh bummer, but that's so nice that you will be there for your friend at such a vulnerable moment in one's life....

Parking: On the north side of the 400 Beach drive building the restaurant offers FREE valet parking. Use the entrance for the parking garage. They usually have signs posted about it. Don't forget to tip the valet guy. :)
