For 33 years, a Sierra Club leader led a hike through Skid Row where he and his volunteers would give the homeless care packages, food, water, and clothing. In 2014 he stopped hosting LA Christmas at Night.
But, in 2015 Peter Gaspar revived LA Christmas at Night!! You can help by either going on the hike and distributing items to the homeless or you can drop off items that night.
Last year, even those it rained earlier that night, there were about 100 people.
Click here for the Facebook Event Page. You only need to RSVP once. This is cross-promote with many other meetup groups!
All items are needed but men's clothing, blankets, jackets, personal hygiene items, and food are the most needed! If you're going to donate food, many homeless people have teeth and gum issues, making chewing hard. So, apples aren't a good idea. Think of soft, easy to chew foods.
Some ideas-look for sales or go to the dollar store for items and/or combine with a friend and share costs.
Personal Hygiene Care packages-toothbrush, toothpaste, bar of soap, and hand towel.
Food care packages-sandwich, bottle of water, chips/fruit.
Clothing care packages-pair of socks and underwear.
To make carrying items easier, bring a backpack or a suitcase with rollers!
You can do part or all of the hike. You will be seeing up close the plight of the homeless.
Invite your friends and family to this event! I will be there, so if you haven't attended a stairhike, please come up and say hi!
While it will be next to impossible to keep track, please do not no show for this event! If you RSVP yes, please attend/donate items for this event!
Please don't take any pictures, especially a selfie, while giving items to the homeless. That is very tacky!!
HELPFUL HINTS: Wear layers and dress for the weather. You don't need to wear your fanciest hiking gear, just dress to stay warm. Sturdy shoes recommended. Bring WATER to stay hydrated. Bring the biggest backpack you can safely handle. Bring goods to donate. Bring $ for parking and breakfast.
PARKING: Joe's Parking Lot at 212 E. 7th St. Metro lot.
Please join us with an open mind, an open heart, and a little streetwise self-confidence, as we seek to make this holiday season a little brighter for the people of Skid Row. Thanks so much for your time!
