Game recap 08-04-2012

Here's a brief recap of our Carrier Group Battle:

Nick and Spencer played a Lyran carrier group, while Gren and James played the Kzinit. I moderated the game.

To begin, the two sides began moving toward one another, keeping pace with their respective fighters. During the first turn, both carriers deployed their fighters. After, they launched a wave of drones at each other. The drones were dealt with using ADDs and phasers. Closing the distance, the Kzinti escort ships headed into the enemy formation dragging four of their own fighters along, while the carrier and fighters split away to afford an opportunity to rearm the fighters. One of the Lyran escorts tractored one of the Kzinti escorts. After a fierce exchange of fire, the Kzinti ship was destroyed. The Lyran ship was severely damaged in the process. Some follow-up attacks destroyed it. A cleverly-placed Transporter bomb eliminated all but two of the Lyran fighters!

The Lyran carrier peeled away and gave chase to the other Kzinti escort. However, the Kzinti carrier had rearmed and relaunched its fighters, and swung back around to assist. The Kzinti ships engaged the Lyran carrier, and destroyed it. The remaining Lyran escorts circled around and attacked, crippling the remaining Kzinti escort. Both Lyran ships were destroyed.

The battle was an overwhelming victory for the Kzinti. They were able to successfully separate the Lyran ships and deal with them. The Lyrans lost all ships, while the Kzinti lost one escort, and suffered the severe crippling of the second. The Kzinti carrier was virtually untouched. Congratulations to Gren and James on their victory.

Throughout this entire battle, none of the fighters were engaged in any dogfights, so we didn't get a chance to see these rules in action. Also, the tactics employed by both sides were somewhat unusual. I would enjoy playing another carrier group engagement in the future--to try some different tactics and see how things unfold.
