In this talk, we will introduce ZEXE, a system for conducting privacy-preserving decentralized computations using zero-knowledge proofs. we will focus on how one can use the strong privacy, expressivity, and efficiency guarantees of ZEXE to realize privacy-preserving analogues of popular applications, such as private user-defined assets, regulation-friendly private stablecoins, and private decentralized exchanges that allow users to trade these while providing front-running resistance.

ZEXE is a zkSNARK based micro-kernel for the blockchain. It provides the absolute minimum in process isolation while ensuring privacy and allowing inter process communication. It also makes all transactions succinct, therefore, it’s also scalable. Because ZEXE is a micro-kernel, you can build different types of systems on top of it. Full fledged smart contracts, smart transactions, or anything else. ZEXE is an OS, not a language or framework.

About Pratyush Mishra:

Pratyush is a third year PhD student at UC Berkeley working on applied cryptography and computer security. He is particularly interested in constructing and applying efficient zero knowledge proofs.

About Howard Wu:

Howard Wu is a cryptography researcher at UC Berkeley, where he is advised by Professor Alessandro Chiesa, and a managing partner of Dekrypt Capital, a blockchain investment firm focused on core infrastructure, privacy-preserving protocols, and early-stage ventures. Howard first became involved with Bitcoin in 2011, and has contributed to cryptographic libraries used in Ethereum and Zcash. He serves as Advisor to Blockchain at Berkeley, the largest university ecosystem for blockchain technology. Howard holds a B.A. in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley.
