Startup Galway Pitches Meetup was formed in early 2015 by Nomad Entrepreneur Eli David of StartupBlink.com

In April 2015, the group was accepted as a subgroup of Startup Galway to take on a specific and practical role, namely to provide meetups where startup founders and promoters can practice pitches and examine ideas while receiving feedback from members and mentors. Two group members, Conor O’Donovan and Donncha Hughes, Curator of Startup Digest Galway were added as Meetup group co-ordinators.  

Our aim: 

It is felt that the Galway support ecosystem would be enhanced if there was a regular open invite meetup where fledgling entrepreneurs/startups could go to practice pitches, validate business ideas/models and get information on supports available relevant to their stage of development. 

It is difficult for people with good idea/product/service to progress to their next stage. As such the aim of this meetup is to help people to sharpen and refine their ideas, to find out about entrepreneurial supports and to share solutions to issues common to all startups. Success will be based on sharing of knowledge among peers, experts and role models. 

Our Focus: 

Each meetup will feature two or three Startups who will present a 10 minute pitch and field questions from the audience with a total slot of not more than 30 minutes each.

In advance of each pitch the facilitator will explain the stage of the pitch and purpose to the audience, for example, looking for feasibility from LEO; applying for New Frontiers Phase 2; CSF; seed investment or even VC (or Dragons Den) or it could be a pitch to a Customer. 

BUT please note that the audience are not to be treated as potential customers after the event so no HARD sell tactics allowed. 

The Startup can decide if they want or don’t want feedback on the pitch from the audience on the day. They will also have option to circulate documentation if they wish. 

Please note that this group will not be bound by NDAs so the startup promoter has full discretion on what information that they want to share. Advance Preparation and Assistance for Pitches The startup promoter will have to submit their Slides or other collateral 48 hours in advance of the meeting. 

A template for the pitch can be provided and the coordinators can arrange for the pitcher to get one hour's advice and guidance over the phone/email in the week leading up to the pitch if required.

What we are not about: 

It is envisaged that the attendance at meetings will be small (between 10 and 20) providing an engaging and quality experience for all involved. Startup Galway organise fantastic networking events with leading speakers. This meetup will not normally be inviting external speakers. 

Who should attend? 

This group is free to join and all events will hopefully be free. At some stage nominal fees may have to be charged similar to OMiG (circa €5) to cover some costs – catering and hospitality. As such the group is also open to offers of sponsorship! 

The group is looking for a diverse audience to include: 

• Pre Startup Promoters looking to learn about supports available to startups and to kickstart their networking. 

• Startup Promoters looking to get active assistance with their pitches for specific purposes.

• People involved in ‘established’ startups who want to contribute to the group.

• Business people to include consultants, advisors, accountants and of course angel investors who want to assist startups in Galway. 

It is not expected that members will attend every meeting but we would like people to commit to attending 40% of meetings each year in order to make a valuable contribution.

How often will Meetup convene? 

The plan is to meet 6 times a year on the last Friday of some months - announced about 2 weeks in advance.

Venue 

In 2015 meetups were held in SCCUL Enterprise Centre, Ballybane; GTC, Mervue; and in WorkBench, Mainguard Street. In 2016, these and other venues such as PixelLabs and the PorterShed will be used subject to availability.
