Bootstrapping - hack your cashflow to grow your startup without investment

Here we are again for March, ready to roll with another cracking evening.  This time we have even more ways for you to get involved, so please read all the details below!

This remains a free event, with free beer and free pizza provided.

Bootstrapping - hack your cashflow to grow your startup without investment

Date and time:

Tuesday 26th March at 630pm

Envato are an awesome Melbourne based startup, whose mission is to help people to earn and to learn, online. They operate marketplaces where hundreds of thousands of people buy and sell digital goods every day, and a network of educational blogs where millions learn creative skills.

Please check them out at

Come and learn from an experienced panel, including the opportunity for plenty of open Q&A.  We have confirmed the following people for the panel:

Leni Mayo - 99Designs, Sitepoint, Flippa, Learnable

Leni is a massive contributor to the Melbourne startup ecosystem, and if you haven't heard him speak before you really should come along.  He has founded startups that were successfully acquired, raised money (then given it back!), and has been an original investor and board member in some of Melbournes most successul startups.

James Farmer - CEO, Incsub

Previously employed at The Age to manage the blogs and community initatives, James has taken that experience and spun it into Edublogs (the largest education blogging network on the web) and WPMUDev, selling the best Wordpress, BuddyPress and Multisite plugins on the web.  With over 160,000 members and over 2 million page views a month, James has built a successful startup from Melbourne via organic growth.

Didier Elzinga - CEO, CultureAmp

Didier founded CultureAmp, a people development software company that delivers a radical new way of approaching performance reviews to fast growing companies all over the world.  Previously he was the CEO of Rising Sun Pictures for 13 years.  Didier is also a non-executive director of both the Atlassian Foundation and Tourism Australia.

Collis Ta'eed - CEO, Envato

Collis is the CEO and co-founder of Envato, the company behind some of the webs leading websites including Themeforest, Audiojungle, Activeden and Tutsplus.  Based in Melbourne, the Envato marketplaces have a combined reach of almost 2.5 million members.

Rebecca Derrington - CEO, Sourcebottle

Rebecca is the entrepreneur who founded SourceBottle three years ago in Australia. Sourcebottle is a free and easy-to-use connection platform that enables journalists and bloggers to efficiently find knowledgeable sources. Since then, the service has expanded into countries in North America, the United Kingdom and the Asia Pacific.

Demo Pit:

After trialling it last month, the demo pit is back bigger than ever!

For this event, we are offering up to 6 spots for founders to present their product/business to over 250 attendees.  This is not a pitch event in front of the entire crowd.  Instead, each startup will be positioned in the room during the pizza/beer at the start of the event.  As people mingle about the room, if they come past your table with your demo setup you can show your product off and maybe land a customer or two.

If getting your demo in front of[masked] like minded entreprenuers is of interest to you, then please apply to take one of these slots.  All you will need is a laptop hooked up to a monitor, and we can probably supply the monitor.

Suitable startups would:

  • Be Melbourne based
  • Have at least 1 founder able to demo the product on the night
  • Have a product to demo (it's okay if it is not totally finished, but we need more than a powerpoint)

To grab a spot, email Cameron Rambert on [masked]

Lightning Talks:

Okay this is a new one for this month, and to make it work we need you to help!  This month, there are two slots available for a startup founder to deliver a short (5 minutes or less) talk on their bootstrapping experience.  There are only 3 rules:

  1. The talk must be 5 minutes or less
  2. It should be loosely based around the theme of the night (growing a startup without outside investment)
  3. Teach us something

If this sounds up your alley and you would like to share your experience with the crowd, send an email pitch to [masked] with your talk idea.  Just a paragraph will be fine.

Actually the people in the audience were pretty phenomenal too. I enjoyed the formal and informal conversations. A little bit of Bay culture in Melbourne!

Thanks for the open and direct feedback on the demo last night for those that found us. Excellent to meet real, live customers and hear what you liked and how we can make the product work for you. If you missed us, head over to and get that idea started!

Great quality panel - nice job.

Bigger isn't always better, despite an impressive line-up. In some ways the night was just about over when Leni started with the simple business wisdom of "develop your product, get a few customers and get paid for it". Thank you to everyone for making it happen.

Good but not great tonight, a good turnout though and plenty of interesting people. It's a shame that there were only two demo spots on show and they were hidden away in the back corner, the demo spots should be in a more prominent position.

The event was great - as always. A big thanks to the organisers and panelists for such a worthwhile evening.

Thanks for picking such a great topic for this month. Having recently launched without any investment, I'm keen to hear about ways to keep my business running efficiently.

Hi Sam, yes I've self invested to this point and built my Team Bus using a combination of myself, my designer brother and some outsourced developers for some of the really tricky stuff. Friends of friends have also been a massive help- it's amazing how people will support you if they think you're doing something good. Thanks for the message Vijai, I'm hoping footy season will be fruitful for us! I'll also check out Hope to meet you both in person on Tuesday!

      March 20, 2013

    • Martin Thomas C.

It turns out I'll be demoing Team Bus in the Demo Pit at tomorrow's event. Look forward to showing our site to lots of new people!

Keen to make sure some great questions from the audience get answered, so this is a shout out for questions for the panel around Bootstrapping. The top 10 questions/themes will be put to the panel on the night! Cut-off for questions is end of Friday... Add your questions below and see you on the night!

Hi Stephen thanks for your answer :) Thats so very true i've been struggling for the past year but I realised that the best piece of advice i've ever received is to ask for help. It sounds simple but it made me open my eyes and realise there are people out there who beleive in you and what you can do and quite often they are the people you interact with ever day. Its just a matter of doing what you do best and the rest will follow.

Hi Phoebe! Congrats on your efforts. I know Mark (committee member) had you on a shortlist of people to be on the panel before we secured the services of Bec. Definitely keen to have on a future panel. There are still 2 slots open for a lightning talk if you wanted to stick your hand up for that? Zap me an email if you do.

      March 15, 2013

Hey Scott, feel free to just email if you ever want suggestions – it wouldn't have taken that much time and effort then.
