Okay - lets kick off 2013 in style with a massive first meetup. Welcome back to Lean Startup Melbourne!!!

This one is all about venture accelerators - what they are, what to do in order to give yourself the best chance to be accepted, and how to crush it if you are lucky enough to get in.

This is a FREE event and includes BEER, wine, pizza and light refreshments.

Check the event schedule below to see what we will be covering, as well as who will be on the panel to offer advice.

Date: 31st of Jan 2013

Time: 6pm kick off

Location: Inspire9

A) 5 minutes: OPENING
Welcome to Lean Startup and general announcements. Hear who has launched something, raised money, and who is hiring right now.

(Hint: If you have news to share with the community that you want announced on the night, such as hiring requirements or product launches, email and we will give you a shout out).

Bowei Gai - Founder and Chief Ambassador of World Startup Report (

World Startup Report is a social mission to document and connect the different startup ecosystems in the world. Bowei will give us an overview of his travels so far, and what he is hoping to achieve over the next 10 months.

Bowei is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and was formerly the founder of CardMunch (acquired by LinkedIn). In 2011, his report on China unexpectedly became a viral hit on the internet and it inspired him to do more to help others in need. World Startup Report mission is his way to give back to the world startup community.

C) 30-45 minutes: ANGELCUBE
Angelcube 2013 overview and Q&A from Adrian Stone and Nathan Sampimon

After a great 2 years, Angelcube is kicking off again in 2013. Applications should open in January, so this is your chance to hear from the founders what they are looking for, how to apply, and how to succeed. There will also be the opportunity to meet previous AngelCube participants. If you are planning on applying this time around your attendance would be strongly encouraged :-)

Highlights from 2012 include Lifx raising more than $1 million on Kickstarter to reinvent the lightbulb, Kickfolio raising a seed round and being accepted into 500Startups, Giftless raising investment funds for further growth, and Broccoli Games being accepted into Startup Chile.

Successful companies in the Angelcube program receive $20,000 seed capital; 6 months free office space; a rigorous 12 week program; access to a larger pool of mentors - and of course the opportunity to participate in demo-days in Australia, and with other network partners in the United States.

We finish off the night with a panel of founders who have all been through an accelerator and lived to tell the tale. Hear from them directly about their experience, and pump them with questions about how they managed to get through such an intense 3 months.

Panel members include:

Bowei Gai - 500startups and co-founder of Cardmunch (sold to LinkedIn).

Fenn Bailey - Ycombinator and co-founder of Adioso

Michael Shimmins - Angelcube and founder of Lexim

David Wei - MAP and co-founder of Crowdmass (sold to Groupon) and now founder of Venuemob

Alan Downie - Startmate and co-founder of Bugherd

All panel members went on to raise money after their incubator experience, so come along and find out how they did it.

Hope to see you there!

Scott Handsaker and Andrew Birt
