Startup Weekend DC (SWDC) aims to grow and accelerate the Washington, D.C. startup ecosystem by organizing events that allow entrepreneurs to launch companies over the course of a weekend. At Startup Weekend events, developers, designers, and non-technical people pitch their ideas, form teams, validate their concepts, build products, and launch startups in just 54 hours!
The event is a startup crash course and runs for three days over a weekend:
Day 1 - Attendees pitch their ideas, vote for their favorites, form teams, and start working
Day 2 - Teams work to validate their concept and design and build products. Mentors provide advice on strategy, user interface and experience, programming, or any other roadblocks the teams face.
Day 3 - Teams refine their products and develop their demos. At the end of the weekend, the teams present to a panel of judges, who vote on the winners.
Many teams continue to work together after the event, and some companies launched at SWDC have been accepted to accelerators and received funding.
SWDC events garner 100-120 attendees each and are typically held in local co-working spaces such as 1776, UberOffices, WeWork, and Disruption Corporation.
Startup Weekend and parent company Up Global are sponsored by top-tier companies such Google for Entrepreneurs, Amazon Web Services, Coca-Cola, and many more. Local sponsors of past events include influential organizations such as DLA Piper, Booz Allen Hamilton, Elance/ODesk, and more.
