• Ukulele Test Drive and Beginner Strumming (Last Thursday of the month)

It’s all about Fun, Friends and Ukuleles! 1. Help a beginner or novice learn to strum. 2. Play some live music with fellow ukulele players in a relaxed bar/restaurant setting. It’s fun and now here’s your chance! Burgr’z on 8 restaurant/bar has partnered with Steel City Ukuleles to offer a “Ukulele Test-Drive” monthly beginner strumming event. You can help folks learn to play a basic song or two, and even sit in with some more experienced players. We guarantee (almost) that anyone can play a song in less than 10 minutes. Ukuleles, basic song and instruction sheets are provided – all you have to do is show up. Any Steel City Ukulele player is welcome as well as friends. Burgr’z on 8 is a family-friendly establishment, has a great menu, with (of course) some of the best burgers in the area. The bar includes lots of cold drinks, including domestic and craft beers on tap. Try a beer or martini flight and/or have a Burger! Get ready to Play-Sing-Teach! Check out the Burgr’z on 8 website (https://www.burgrzon8.com/) for the menu and more details. Come over, bring your uke, sing, play and stay for the evening. It’s all about Fun, Friends and Ukuleles!

  • Del Rey workshop and concert

    Wilkins School Community Center

    $30.00

Del Rey is coming back to Pittsburgh! She will be running a workshop from 7-8 p.m. and ending with a concert from 8:15-9:15 p.m. Ukulele Blues Party Jugband and blues songs orchestrated for the ukulele, with playing and singing parts for several levels of player. We’ll work on getting that old-timey sound on your uke, with the right rhythm, chord positions and where to find the melody. Plus we’ll try and listen to each other and play together. We’ll add parts for basic chords, strumming, picking and singing. Basic level: be comfortable and confident with first position chords and able to keep time while changing between them. Took it last time? It’ll be a different song and build on what you learned. First time? It’s a Blues Party-you’ll like it! Reentrant (high G) tuning preferred. By ear, no TAB. Tickets are $30 for workshop + concert and $10 for concert only. Tix sold at Eventbrite online and at WSCC meetups. (If you pay in cash to us at one of our Meetups, you don't have to pay fees.) Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/del-rey-workshop-and-concert-tickets-57150080429 We are in a limited space at WSCC so will sell tix at door as long as we are not sold out. RSVP on Meetup DOES NOT register you for the event. Bio: Del Rey started playing guitar when she was four years old. At thirteen, she was immersed in the world of folk music, via the San Diego Folk Festival. She has tried to get a whole band onto her solo instrument from the beginning. This gives her music an interesting complexity, especially when applied to the ukulele. Rags, blues and tunes of the early 20th century are her specialty, even as she writes new music to add to the tradition. Del Rey also has fashion sense that would make Minnie Pearl smile. Del Rey has taught and played all over the world, and brings her distinctive finger-style approach to guitar and ukulele to her teaching DVDs on Homespun “Boogie-Woogie Guitar” ” The Music Of Memphis Minnie” , “Memphis Uke Party” and “Blue Uke. Her website is www.delreyplays.com and her albums can be found at www.hobemianrecords.com
