TRAIL CREW VOLUNTEER - Help the National Park Service - Camping and Hiking
We are volunteering with the National Park Service (NPS) and the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC). We help the parks maintain the hiking trails in the Dingmans Ferry, PA area. We do this once every month from April through November. This is a fun and rewarding weekend with a great group of people. There are approximately 10 regulars that help out every month but everyone is welcome. NO SKILLS ARE REQUIRED and NPS PROVIDES TOOLS AND TRAINING You only help with jobs you feel comfortable preforming. Just know your limits and come to help and have some fun. This is my 2nd year helping and these are a list of tasks I've seen done on the trails. * Trim branches hanging in the trails * Remove fallen trees from the trails (trees are cut up for us already) * Fill in holes of dirt from uprooted trees * Build bridges over swampy areas * Reroute trails based on storms that passed through the area * Build steps / Waterbars / Checks * Blow leaves off the trails We usually go up Friday night, setup camp, and sit around the fire drinking and talking. Saturday morning we meet in front of the PEEC building at 9 AM for a brief safety meeting, get the details of tasks to be completed, and split into groups by the NPS. We work until around 4 PM and then head back to camp. We have a theme campfire family style dinner Saturday night and just hang out. I will UPDATE the dinner theme when I know and everyone brings a small dish to share with the group. Sunday morning option of working 9 AM - noon or packing up and going home. PEEC provides the volunteers with camping options but it is based on availability. We will either get the yurts or cabins but you may always tent camp (I always tent camp) * Yurts - They will have male yurts and female yurts with showers and bathrooms right outside * Cabins - They will have male cabins and female cabins with showers and bathrooms inside the cabins. * Tent Campsite - Always available but bring all your own gear (you do not need firewood) - Bathrooms and showers are available near the yurts or in the cabins. PEEC will also supply breakfast some mornings but not always. I will update this detail when I receive the group email from the PEEC members. WHAT TO BRING: Camping clothes and gear / Comfortable Hiking Shoes / Long comfortable pants / Water and more water / Dinner for Friday night / Breakfast for Saturday morning / Lunch for Saturday afternoon / Theme dinner for Saturday night / Breakfast for Sunday morning / Lunch for Sunday afternoon

What we're about

Steel City Outdoor is a new meetup group for people that like get get outside. We plan lots of camping and kayaking trips during warm weather, bike rides during warm and cooler weather, and hiking trips during the colder months. We are always looking for new adventures to stay active and keep off the beer bellies.

This is a fun group. We are not looking to race when biking, or paddle as fast as possible, or run while hiking (we may skip a bit though, you know the ground is lava game). We like to be outside so why not make it last, plan for the whole day, stop and take some pictures, enjoy the events.

We love to travel and plan meetups all over NJ, PA, DE, MD, maybe a few further trips in the future.

We are not experts in every outdoor sport and are still learning about all these free and beautiful resources all over this area. We always stick together on trips and look out for each other to help everyone feel and stay safe. We are always open to new ideas for outdoor adventures.

We are looking for fun people that share similar interests to go out and have some fun.
