• Evening Walk and Pub -Poynton

    Poynton Civic Hall

This Wednesday we will walk from Poynton, up to Higher Poynton via Princes Incline, dropping onto Macclesfield canal. Walking along the canal, onto Middlewood Way and return via The Coppice and Ladies Incline. The Wednesday evening walks are always popular -33 attended last week. Meet at Poynton Civic Hall at 7.30pm........Park Ln, Poynton, Stockport SK12 1RB (Civic Hall and Car Park are behind Waitrose Supermarket) There is a large free car park, so no issue parking. There is a choice of venues close by for after walk drinks. A little history of the area we will be walking; Poynton once had the largest coalfield in Cheshire, with 74 pits. Both Inclines were part of the Poynton Collieries railway system. Princes Incline being the longest, originally rope-worked, it was converted to locomotive haulage in 1889. They were built to take coal from the pits in the area. Coal mining ended in 1935. Poynton Coppice is classed as an ancient semi-natural wood because although it has a history of felling it has never been ploughed or used other than as woodland. In 1847, 44 acres of the Coppice were planted with trees by Lord Vernon to provide timber for the mines, and some for sale. Plans to bring a canal through the Coppice for carrying coal were proposed in 1795 but abandoned because of the high cost of construction. During the[masked] coal strike the Coppice was felled.
