  • Colloquium: A Better Form of Government

    Online event

Dr. John J. Park, an assistant professor of philosophy at California State University, Sacramento, addresses one of the major questions in the history of political philosophy: What is the best form of government? In western philosophy this question has long been thought to be resolved with democracy—to the point of attaining the status of dogma. However, Dr. Park’s paper challenges this thesis by presenting arguments for a hybrid view that appends the eastern philosophical idea of a meritocracy, or rule by the merited, to democracy. He demonstrates how his particular hybrid view, meritocratic democracy, is better than democracy alone. Dr. Park received a Ph.D. in philosophy from Duke University. His research interests are ethics, political philosophy, and philosophy of mind & cognitive science.
