What we're about

This meetup's purpose is to connect artists and art lovers in the Stony Brook area to events run by our not-for-profit school, The Atelier at Flowerfield. More importantly, the purpose of this group is to connect you into a network of people who encourage, inspire, and enrich one another with their artistic expression.

In this group you can expect information about free art events as well as drawing events which charge a cover for the price of the model. At all of our events you can expect to feel welcome and leave having learned something new.

We offer weekly studio art classes and drawing events all run out of our north light studios, as well as biweekly figure drawing sessions with a live band at The Jazz Loft of Stony Brook. We also offer free bi-weekly art history lectures, run out of our gallery on site. The gallery runs year-round, ever-changing exhibitions with free admission 6 days a week.

We hope to meet you soon!

FREE TRIAL! Figure Drawing Class

Location visible to members

Come for a free trial of "Figure Drawing Fundamentals," an 8 week course in learning how to realistically draw the nude. In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and practices of realistically drawing the human figure. Students will learn the “block-in” method of beginning a drawing which will lay the ground work for developing a finished piece. Starting with gesture, students will progress to longer poses where they will learn to use anatomical landmarks to aid in the construction of the figure, as well as shapes, and conceptual form modeling. They will also be introduced to the concept and system of comparative measurement to quickly and accurately get the proportions of the model. Anatomical lectures, demos and group critiques will be utilized throughout the course to push students to a broader and more advanced perceptual ability. Taught by Alexander Soukas. Tuition: $580 for 8 week session. Come for a free trial class anytime during the month of March. Questions? Call The Atelier at [masked]

Tim McGuire Figure and Portrait Workshop

The Atelier at Flowerfield

Join Tim McGuire in this 5-day drawing and oil painting workshop, “Drawing and painting the Portrait and the Figure in Context.” The focus of the workshop is the development of a useful approach to drawing and painting the portrait and the clothed figure through several small studies in various media (pencil, charcoal, oil), and one larger “finished piece.” In so doing, we’ll explore how best to create a certain mood- each painter’s individual take on the theme. The morning session will focus on the portrait- using a combination of head construction and comparative measuring techniques based on my studies and personal experience. We’ll do a number of small compositional and color studies before starting in on a life’-size drawing of the head, neck, and shoulders. The afternoon will focus on the clothed figure in context- a clothed model in an interior setting within an environment that tells a story. We’ll discuss strong compositional strategies and how to avoid common mistakes. We’ll study a variety of compositions by sketching in pencil and charcoal, complete small color studies in oil, and ultimately one larger drawing and one larger painting which encompasses each of the previous exercises. This workshop is ideal for anyone who wishes to strengthen their skills in portraiture and figure work. It teaches a method of working from life that builds upon proven academic concepts and is highly practical in the real world.
