What we're about

Curriculum presented by SILENTLY PUBLISHING on How to Write Compelling [Series] Fiction. Writing a novel length story is challenging, but writing a series sometimes requires a slightly different approach. Join us to see a story structure project created in-house to help our novel-length story writers (becoming authors) manage the creative process with a database tool written in Access.

You know when a story works. Everything fits, the story moves, the narrative flows, and you meet people in the story that stay with you. This is the difference between COMPELLING fiction and just writing something. We genuinely want our stories to reach beyond our world into the hearts of readers, those who need this story - but how to get there is another matter. To craft a COMPELLING novel length story, whether the story be in written form, audio drama, screenplay, or whatever format, telling a story that matters and that grabs reader's attention, as well as their hearts, is a goal worthy of the effort it takes. Part of our content is derived from the Christian perspective and how God creates. In the very first word spoken by God - "light" - everything that is contained in every meaning of this word, every context, every language; this is what God said with the single word: light. This is not a Christian group, per se, but anyone can join. We are looking for the story building blocks that dynamically move, escalate, and captivate readers. We are looking for a way to craft the dynamics of a story, like a car having an engine, an aspect of writing that is worthy of study. We are looking on how to render stories with as much factual and accurate setting detail as possible. We are wanting to derive from a single story word -- like, driven -- the way scenes are arranged, they way events in the story are shown and rendered, and how to reach a state of writing we call "OVERFLOW" that (we hope) will help you create a compelling first draft. We also plan content based on the technical side of publishing, like how to use In Design to typeset or how to use White Smoke to clarify your grammar or how to use Google Earth street view to investigate a given setting. We think you will find that writing, itself, may require a broad range of people: readers, photographers, editors, people with a specialized knowledge (i.e. sailing ships, European history in the 1800's, world builders), and maybe even computer techs. If you are already a fiction writer or you desire to be, join us to explore what is it that makes fiction COMPELLING, as well as the courage to make it happen again in a ... series.
