What we're about

Join us for meditation and kick ass Dharma talks every Wednesday evening from 7-8:30! We are Stray Cat Dharma Oakland, formerly Dharma Punx Oakland. We’re an all-inclusive group that is all about meeting up in a dusty, eclectic old church on top of a hill in Oakland. It’s a brisk 13 minute walk from BART devoid of any scenic lake views. Our groups are lead by a rotating all star cast of damn near enlightened Bay Area Dharma instructors. A chunk of our members come from Refuge Recovery, but that is by no means a requirement for joining the band. If you are a stray, or a cat, or just really want to learn more about the Dharma and meditate with a super cool, slightly punk and always friendly group of peeps, then why not come check us out?

Stray Cat Dharma Weekly Meditation & Dharma Talk

111 Fairmount Ave

We meditate each and every Wednesday evening starting at 7 PM and we'd love for you to come join us! Evenings start with a half hour meditation sit followed by a Dharma talk / discussion lead by a rotating cast of teachers. We generally practice mindfulness meditation in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. There is minimal guidance, but sometimes we change it up and do a guided mediation or a Meta practice. Instruction is available for anyone that needs it. You really don't need to bring anything but yourself and maybe a sweater cause it sometimes gets a little chilly. We've got a few meditation cushions but most of us are chair meditators! Feel free to bring along your own cushion. Our groups usually consist of 10 to 20 people. Beginners, intermediate and quasi-advanced meditators. ALL are welcome! Some folks come almost every Wednesday, other only make it once a month or so. We're progressive minded, casual & relaxed and a good handful of us come from Refuge Recovery, however that is most definitely not a requirement. Nor is joining in with any discussion a requirement. Essentially the only thing that will be asked of you is to not start banging on a drum in the middle of the meditation! :) We practice Dana - the free giving of whatever might be available. This donation covers the rent (which isn't very much) and anything left over goes to the teacher. It's totally fine if you aren't able to provide any dana donation. We still would love to have you! One last thing - there's a parking lot behind the church and you are free to park there. It generally doesn't fill up accept on the first Wednesday of each month. BART is just under a 15 minute walk away.
