A Royal Affair at 8:05 p.m.; Fido's first at 7:10 p.m.

A grand period drama with a lusty, beating heart, A Royal Affair brings a sharp, contemporary edge to this notorious true story of illicit love and poltical intrigue. In the late eighteenth century, the spoiled and susceptible King of Denmark, Christian VII, takes well to his new personal physician Johann Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen), a ruggedly handsome German doctor and staunch proponent of the Enlightenment’s reformist principles who partners with the captivating queen, Caroline Mathilde to convince the king to embark on an aggressive campaign of reforms. Their palpable chemistry, combined with Arcel’s assured direction and the film’s fine art direction and costume design, create both a sweepingly romantic and subtly nuanced portrait of this infamous episode in Denmark’s history. At once intimate and epic, A Royal Affair is one of the finest, most well-crafted period dramas in recent memory.

“First Rate. This excellent drama is a great companion to the likes of AMADEUS and THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE.” – Philip French, The Guardian (UK)

Dir. Nikolaj Arcel, Denmark, 2012, 132 min., R, 35mm, In Danish with English subtitles

Movie was well-done but left me a bit cold. Mads Mikkelsen was great, however. Great to see new people and glad to see some regulars back.

Hi. For those who haven't met me, I'll be wearing a short sleeve black Vandy t-shirt tonight with tan pants. I'm likely to be the only one at Fido's in a short sleeve so I should be easy to spot. :) My cell is[masked]
