Chapter Meeting! Camping! Fun! Food! at Starkey Wilderness Park

Come for the weekend, or just for Saturday at Starkey Wilderness Park.

Camping is available Friday and Saturday - $5.00 fee  for anyone camping one or both nights.. We have capacity for 40. Pay Cathy or Sue B when you get there.

Campers drive to the group site, drop gear, park out at the corral.  Cathy will bring parking permit for you to place on your dashboard.

LADIES ONLY! ACCOMODATIONS OPTION! FROM RUTH ROGG

We've rented a 4 person cabin at Starkey for Friday and Saturday nights. Ruth Rogg will use one bed both nights. Please call or e-mail Ruth if interested in staying "inside". [masked],[masked] or cell[masked]-5833. Ladies only.

Those just coming for Saturday, pay $2.00 Pasco Cty park fee at self service kiosk at entrance to the park

Saturday morning 8:am - Alan Bailey will conduct a field lesson in Land Navigation.

Land navigation, is the study of traversing through unfamiliar terrain by foot . Land navigation includes the ability to read maps, use a compass, and other navigational skills. (wiki

"For the land navigation session, you will need a base plate compass with declination scale, either fixed or adjustable (recommended). This type of compass is available online, and at local stores, including some of our outfitter advertisers, and many other sporting goods, and camping, fishing and hunting equipment retailers. Simplest is best - you shouldn't have to spend more than about $20.00 - borrowing one is even better (as long as you return it in good shape)."

Questions on equipment requirements... please contact Alan at:

[masked]  or via our Meetup site email...

Bring 2 liters water, a couple of pencils, and prep as you would for any of of our warm weather hikes.  We will be in the sun and trekking through the brush for a few hours. This activity will require a high level of physical fitness.

Chapter business meeting will be around or just after lunchtime on Saturday the 17th.

We will do our traditional Friday night pot luck, Saturday hot dog lunch at cost of $2.00 per person, please bring a dish to pass for lunch

and we will be having  Sunday breakfast. (Those who stay for Sunday breakfast, please throw a couple of bucks Sue's way as she has been bringing eggs/bread, etc on her own dime for all these breakfasts for a couple of years)

You do not have to be an FTA member to participate in any part of the weekend. However, if you regularly enjoy our activities, we would appreciate your support by way of joining the FTA.

I enjoyed meeting so many members of the group. Being a guest to the group allowed me to meet the members. Because of the friendliness of the group I ended up joining the group. Because I had a trailer and a dog I decided I would leave and find a camp ground to set up camp for the weekend. I met a mom and her daughter at a picnic table that were very friendly and helpful in many ways. I would like to get ahold of her to thank them for their kindness. I also have a couple of dog bags they were interested in. If you read this comment feel free to contact me at [masked]

Really great weekend with a great group of people. I have someone's spoons (2) and a tool. Not saying what kind of tool. Only that if you are missing a tool describe it. If the description fits, its yours. Otherwise...I think I'll keep it LOL.

I really enjoyed my first camp-out with the group. Lots of fun activities, laughter and memorable experience. Thanks to all who work behind the scenes to make everything move so smoothly. I know I wasn't much help ...but thanks to Cathy & Sue for their hospitality and hard work...and all the leadership and learning with those especially knowledge on leading hikes, providing classes, during the day and at night. As I recall, the land navigation class is the equivalent of a moderately difficult hike due to length, distance, heat, and and having to plow through dense palmetto and tick infested scrub oak to find the markers..... That being said, Justin Sparks and Alex will be available to lead a shorter, easier hike for those who would prefer to do so......
