Night Hike at Myakka State Park

Join the FTA for a night hike in one of Florida’s largest and oldest state parks, Myakka River State Park.

This 4-mile loop hike will take you through several of Florida’s diverse ecosystems such as pine flat woods, prairies and hardwood hammocks.

The sun will be setting, so we will be looking and listening for the marvelous sights and sounds of dusk in the woods! Birds returning home to roost, crickets and frogs croaking and chirping, mystery animals calling in the distance. This will be a hike for all the senses, not just sight, so we will walk quietly. We will take a leisurely pace but avoid stopping so that the mosquitoes remain a minor nuisance.

Since this is an FTA event, there is no admission fee into the park but there is a $5 per person suggested cash donation. One hundred percent of the donation goes to the FTA Suncoast Chapter for ongoing trail maintenance. This will be collected the night of the hike.

Myakka River State Park is located 10 miles East of I-75 on SR 72 (exit 205), park entrance is on the left. We will be meeting at 6pm in the parking area just past the ranger station on the left.

Minimum Age: 10 years (please use your best judgement)

Here’s what to bring:

Change of shoes for after the hike (in case of water on the trail)

Drinking water in reusable bottle or hydration pack

Sturdy hiking shoes, preferably hiking boots
Pocket flashlight or headlamp (kept in pocket, for emergency use only)
Walking stick or hiking poles
Bug spray recommended
Please apply bug spray before you join the group

Please silence and put away cell phones.

Please, no flash photography.

If you have any questions, feel free to call or text me at (941)[masked] or email me at [masked]

We are not going to make it tonight. April is trying to shake the bug thats going around, so tonight will be for TLC to help her heal. We hope to make it to another one soon.

I've been put on the wait list - does this mean the hike is already full? If I can go I'm offering carpool from St Pete if anyone is interested! :)

Good afternoon everyone, Looks like the night hike for Saturday Night is going to be a great hike. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. As for the hike, we will be meeting at the South entrance to the park off of SR 72 at 6:00 pm. This is a pretty easy hike so feel free to bring any of the gear in the list in the description. After the hike, everyone is welcome to join us around the campfire.

Cellphone coverage is not the best in the park so if you need to get a hold of me, contact me by phone or text at (941)[masked], please don't send me messages on meetup, as I will not receive them. If you are on the wait list, please feel free to join us. Its going to be a large group but we will have a great time.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the hike.

Good afternoon, thank you all for signing up for the night hike. It appears that we will have a large turnout that will probably be split into two different groups. I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be unable to communicate until about 11/28, so if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me via text or phone call after 11/28. Looking forward to meeting everyone on our night hike.
