Western Corridor Series Hike #7! Citrus Tract: Whispering Pines to Mutual Mine

Hike #7 brings us into one of my favorite areas of the trail maintained by the Suncoast Chapter - the Citrus Tract of the Withlachoochee State Forest. Hills, sinks, limestone caves, hammocks and pine forests. This area is home to all manner of wildlife including deer, quail and a dense population of pileated woodpeckers.
We will meet at Mutual Mine and shuttle to the short hike take out at Holder Mine and Whispering Pines Park to begin our hike. 5.5 miles to Holder Mine, 13 to miles Mutual Mine.

Very nice hike, very well organized. The weather was not typical of January---very muggy.

Had a blast but as others said, a little toasty. Looking forward to the next one...hopefully with cooler temps!

I am going to re-route the next hike so that we go through the sink. That area is shaded, cooler, has unique vegetation and more limestone caves! Also, it should stay under 75 degrees - that's 10 less than it was on our toasty Wed. :-)

Unseasonably warm - up to at least 84 degrees - and yet we all survived! Next week is supposed to stay under 75 degrees. At any rate, I will change the next route so there is more shade. We can go into Lizzie Hart Sink. Thanks for to all for coming out and braving the January heat!

I am psyched to go tomorrow. Finally going on my first hike with you. About how long does the 5.5 mile and the 13 mile hike take to complete? Just need to know approximately when we would get back to our cars so I can let my daughter know when I'll be home. I will be heading north on 581. When I take the left into the campground, it there only one parking area?

James & Jerillyn - If you click on the (map) link above you will see where to meet. Also, below are some written directions that I found by Google-searching Mutual Mine Campground. Hope this helps you. Elizabeth, if I am misdirecting anyone, please delete this.

The park is located in the Citrus Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest, south of Inverness. From the junction of State Road 44 and State Road 581 on the west side of Inverness, drive eight miles south on State Road 581 to the campground entrance on the west side of the highway.

I am confused. The emails I received indicated the Inverness to mutual mine hike is Saturday the 5th. What day is it?

Meetup is the place to check for the current hike schedule. If it is not listed on meetup - it's not happening. That hike is now on Wed. Jan. 9th.

I'm not coming on this particular hike, but I have a general question I can't figure out where to ask (sorry if I haven't figured out meet up enough yet!) I've notice most of the hikes are at least 7 miles, often longer, & at least for now, I'm not sure I'm up for that long of an outing. Is it okay to come along for as far/long as I want, then just turn around & go back by myself? This would be fine with me, I'd be comfortable doing the return/backtrack on my own, but I wanted to ask before I turned up to a hike planning on doing this. Thanks much!

I will give this a try Shannon.... It would be the hike leaders call. Some of the trails are easy to follow, well blazed making a backtrack a feasible option. Most hike leaders would want you to call when you got back to your car. Some hikes are very "off the beaten path" with undeveloped trail, no markings, inconspicuous turns, etc. On these hikes, one would not be permitted to turn back on their own. Ask the hike leader directly about specific hikes. This particular hike has a 5.5 mile option.

Thanks, Lenny, I'm glad I asked first, then. I wish I could go on this one with the shorter option but I can't. Your input was very helpful, I guess when I find one I'd like to try I'll contact that leader ahead of time to find out. Thanks again!
