May Field Trip

Because of Mother's Day, we've moved the date to Saturday, May 10th. We will be hiking along a loop trail about 2 miles long but we will take a casual stroll to observe the flora and fauna.  It is an interesting site with nice trails through xeric hammocks with a bridge crossing over the north prong of the Alafia River.  The trail leads through a relic phosphate mine site with unusual topography and plants.  This fieldtrip is timed to see the Leafless Beaked orchid, Sacoila lanceolata var. lanceolata in bloom and perhaps the white flowered form of the Passion Flower, Passiflora incarnata.

Check out the Preserve at

We will meet at the Pinecrest Little League ball field where there is parking. The address is 9312 South CR 39, Plant City.

Call Devon if you have questions or are running late at[masked]-1183.

Directions to Alafia River Corridor trailhead on County Road 39:

From I-75, take the exit for Gibsonton Drive just south of the Alafia River. Turn east onto Gibsonton Drive ( Road name changes to Boyette Road east Hwy 301, then Fish Hawk Blvd. east of Bell Shoals Rd.) and drive for 8 miles to Lithia-Pinecrest Rd.

Turn right (southeast) onto Lithia-Pinecrest Rd. and drive for 4 miles to CR 39.

Turn left (north) onto CR 39 and drive for 2 miles.

Parking for the trailhead is located on the east side of CR 39, just past entrance to Alderman’s Ford Park, on the north side of Pinecrest Little League baseball fields.

If you are coming from the north, take Hwy 60 east to CR 39 south.  Go south 5.4 miles to the Pinecrest Little League Ball Field.

I am glad you changed the day. I will be there. I am looking forward to this hike. It is very close to my home, yet I have never hiked there.

I didn't realize it was Mother's Day either. My sisters and I, and my Mom, always meet for an brunch or lunch. Might be an issue for me as well.
