The second event in the Suncoast Skeptics Speaker Series will take place on September 6, 2014 at 1pm in the Fruitville Library meeting room (the bigger of the two rooms). Our speaker for this event will be the founder of the Suncoast Skeptics, David Williamson (bio below). Feel free to bring friends, family, food, and drinks. We have a seating capacity of 80 people, so please RSVP with the number you expect to bring.
David will discuss ongoing issues, recent success, and what each of us can do to ensure that "Jefferson’s Wall" is sufficient to keep religion and government separate. Real world opportunities for us to be part of state/church separation efforts will be discussed with plenty of time for Q&A.
David's bio: David Williamson joined the freethought movement 5 years ago in Sarasota where he founded the Suncoast Skeptics and helped establish a chapter of the Atheists of Florida. When he moved to Orlando in 2012, he created the area’s first organization focused on state/church separation, the Central Florida Freethought Community. In a very short time, the CFFC has stopped several state/church violations and David joined Co-Presidents of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker as plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Orange County Public Schools. In 2013, he served as the Chair of the Secular Coalition for Florida and also received the Florida Humanist Association’s Humanist of the Year Award for his efforts in community organizing and activism. In March, he was endorsed by the Humanist Society as a Humanist Celebrant. This designation is awarded to those who serve as ambassadors to humanism as a leader, ceremony officiant, and scholar of humanism.
