  • Stand Up for Kids Meal - Homeless Outreach
In partnership with Stand Up For Kids, we are providing meals for homeless youth at a day shelter in Downtown San Diego. You can sign up to make/purchase food and drop it off at the shelter, serve food and enjoy conversations with other volunteers, make food and arrange for it to be picked up, or any combination of the above. We currently need: 2 or more volunteers to serve food, 2-3 Main dishes, 2 side dishes, and 2 desserts. Each dish should be enough to feed 6-8 people. SUFK has requested that we not bring green salad, as it is largely going to waste. Please let us know in the comments below what you’re bringing and/or if you’re coming to serve. Please bear in mind: This event requires a commitment, so please only sign up if you are absolutely dedicated to providing a meal. If you sign up and then don't bring anything, or don't let us know about a change of plans the day before, the kids won't get a good meal that night. Please bring your dish to the shelter at around 5 pm. We usually serve around 5:30-5:45. If the door isn't open when you arrive, give us a call at[masked] and we’ll let you in. Stand Up for Kids is located on 16th St between Island Ave and Market St, on the east side of the street. It is located in the same building as the Humble Heart thrift shop. There is no sign on the building for Stand Up for Kids - if you're having trouble finding it, call or text[masked], and we'll try to guide you. Please park in the spaces marked for Stand Up for Kids or on the street. If you have any questions, contact Jen or post them in the comments.

  • Tacky Holiday Lights Potluck Party in Chula Vista
It's nearly time for the annual eye-fest that is the Christmas Circle in Chula Vista, a neighborhood that always brings its over-the-top-house-decorating A game. Whether you think it's delightful, pretty, and/or appallingly gauche, it's a sight to behold. Walk with your Sunday Assembly peeps through the 'hood, and share your snark and Ooohs and Aahhs. Remember that one year where that one house had a Santa in camoflauge? Good times, y'all. Good times. This time around, a special inside connection who LIVES on the circle is hosting this party! Thanks so much to Denise and her kids for hosting!! Every year when we walk the circle, we get to see the homeowners sitting in their driveways, having little parties with hot chocolate, and saying hi to the people walking by, and this time WE get to be the cool kids, hanging out in a driveway. The hosts will provide meat and drinks, but this is a BYOS&D (bring your own sides and desserts) event. If you have dietary preferences, please bring something you want to put in your face hole. IF YOU ARE DRIVING, AVOID TAKING 1ST OR 2ND AVENUES, and instead take Hilltop or 3rd. At 5 PM, the parking close to the Circle shouldn't be too bad, but later on, it will be completely hosed, so you might have to park several short blocks away. If there's anyone who wants to come but isn't a car-user, please comment here and we'll try to hook you up with a driver for your convenience, or someone can pick you up at the closest trolley station, no worries.

  • Feed The Homeless Downtown With Sandwich Saturdays!
Join the Outreach Team as we team up with Sandwich Saturdays to hand out sandwiches downtown to those in need (every other Saturday). Sandwich Saturdays meets at the tables outside Albertson's and makes sandwiches for distribution on the nearby streets. This event involves walking several blocks, but we have opportunities for those with disabilities to help. (Please reach out ahead of time and we can make accommodations for you.) We always need supplies, someone to watch the clothing pile, and people to assemble sandwiches. This set up time is where a lot of our socializing happens before our walkers head out to make the rounds. Feel feel to stay for just the set up if you are unable to walk a large distance. We use only what our volunteers bring so if you are so inclined to run into Albertson's and buy some peanut butter, bread, lunch meat, string cheese, water, cookies, etc. we would really appreciate it! Or bring things from home! (Wet wipes and hand sanitizer are big hits! So are new socks! The dollar store is a great resource for this stuff!) Everyone is welcome to help! Our meetup attracts secular, religious, and atheist volunteers. We hand out food, water, and various supplies without expectations or requirements. Folks who are homeless are vulnerable and can feel pressured to make volunteers happy in order to receive help, so we don't ask people in need to take our literature, pray with us, perform a religious act, appear in a picture, etc. The global Sunday Assembly community is itself secular, but we are more than happy to partner with people of faith in our charitable work as long as these guidelines are respected. Kids are welcome to come help! Since we are working with people with mental illness, drug addiction, and living in stressful environments please expect bad language, people in various states of awareness (high, unconscious), and sometimes yelling. We have yet to see any violence, but of course there is no guarantee. There is a large group of us for safety reasons and we expect anyone who is part of our MeetUp to stay with the group at all times. Please don't fall behind and let someone know if you're "running up the street to get that one guy a sandwich." We stick together.

  • Sunday Assembly with Ryan Bell
Joy is an internal sense of well-being and it's a fundamental part of a life well-lived. But when there is so much stress and anxiety in our lives, where can we find joy? Is it fair to experience joy when there's so much to be concerned about? Not only is it fair, but we aren't helping anyone by disregarding our own joy. Ryan Bell, National Organizing Manager at the Secular Student Alliance and Humanist Chaplain at USC, will try to shift your perspective so you can find joy even when there is turbulence all around you. Sunday Assembly San Diego is a new radically inclusive deity-free community that meets monthly to hear inspirational talks, connect for service projects, sing songs and generally celebrate life. Assemblies are free to attend, and everyone is welcome. http://www.sundayassemblysandiego.org
