Help Often: Mama Rosa's Kids

Mama Rosa's Kids is a faith-based charity focusing on at-risk children in South Atlanta. Assembler, Joan O'Brien, and her friends contribute additional support for these kids and their families via various projects throughout the year. They just finished filling and distributing Thanksgiving food boxes to 60 families living below the extreme poverty line. Joan says, "As always, it was a profoundly joyful experience to work with the community and these children and families."

The group is now working to provide Christmas presents for 48 at-risk children  and they need our help. All donations are tax deductible, as Mama Rosa's Kids is a 501(c)3 charity. You may purchase the items yourselves, or make a tax deductible donation and let us do the shopping and wrapping for you! (We do get great deals bulk shopping!)

For each child we need:
- 1 new outfit including pants, shirt, fleece or sweater, socks & underwear
- 1 new toothbrush
- 1 (or more) age-appropriate toys
- We would also like to give each child a new warm blanket.

The Children
(This is only 10 of the 48 children in need. We can do more!)

1. Mya Girl 6 yrs size 7
2. Anya Girl 6 yrs size 7
3. Geontaye Boy 4 yrs size 5
4. Leshon Boy 11 yrs size 12
5. Donte Boy 9 yrs size 10
6. Kylan Boy 1 yrs size 1T
7.Johnathan Boy 7 yrs size 8
8. Daniel Boy 11 yrs size 12
9. Jantez Boy 5 yrs size 6
10.Dre Quan Boy 5 yrs size 7

You may help in several ways
- Select a child or children and donate money for the outfit and toy
- Or shop for the items yourself (Black Friday is near!)
- Or, make tax deductible donations in any amount via Joan or the website

If you choose to support an individual child, please just note in the comments which children you are covering so we can remove them from the list. If you are interested in doing more, we can provide other names - there are many children in need.

All items and donations need to be in by December 17. (The date on this virtual event is the deadline.) Clothing items, toys and monetary donations can be dropped off at Joan's house or you can bring donations to a small group like Meditation, Wonder Club, Potluck, etc. Or, you can message Joan via Meetup and she'll be happily to work something out.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

FYI - The preschool had insufficient funds to open this year. Plans are to open it again next fall. In the meantime we continue our regular projects to support these children. If you would like to learn more, please check out their website at

    Hi Joan,
Do you have enough blankets? I just found a bag of them (throw size mostly) in my closet. I was going to make them into 'quillows' (blanket folds into a pillow) but I can leave them the way they are as well. LMK if you can still use them.
    Paula :)

I was going to give time and support to this but now I am working at night and on a daily basis. We'll see what the future allows me to do. Much success to this function. Happy festive days and New Year 2 all!!!!!!!!

I'd like to donate $50 to take care of one! What's the best way to do that?

Joan, can you estimate how large a cash donation would need to be to take care of one of the children?

    1 · November 24, 2015

    • Joan

The estimate is $40-$50. It varies some year to year.
