  • September Monthly Gathering: Fair Division
Join us for our monthly Sunday Assembly! Once a month we get together to celebrate life, socialize, and learn how to Live Better, Help Often, and Wonder More. What is the definition of “fair”? How do you divide resources among people to make sure everyone gets an equal share? What criteria should determine things like which astronomers get access to telescopes? To help us understand these concepts, our speaker this month is Kevin Schiroo, whose talk will touch on the mathematics of fair division. Kevin is a computer scientist with a personal focus on the intersection of algorithms and society. He holds a Masters degree in computer science from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelors degree in mathematics from Coe College. He has performed research with the Wiki Education Foundation and GroupLens as well as worked as a software engineer and data scientist for companies including IBM and the Nerdery. Our band will have some songs to share about fairness, plus we’ll have a variety of readings, media, and get-to-know-you activities to explore our theme. Then stay after to join us for for our annual meeting!

  • July Monthly Gathering: Affordable Housing
Join us for our monthly Sunday Assembly! Once a month we get together to celebrate life, socialize, and learn how to Live Better, Help Often, and Wonder More. In many countries, access to affordable housing is considered a human right that affects the well-being of people and families. While housing discrimination is illegal in the state of Minnesota, providing access to housing is a nuanced issue that extends to zoning laws, neighborhood organizations, and parking restrictions. Jeff Horwich is Director of Policy and External Affairs for the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. He is a former host and reporter for MPR and a consumer compliance examiner at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). He holds an MS in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota and a BA in Public Policy from Duke University. Our band will have a few songs to share about housing, plus we'll have a variety of readings, media, and get-to-know-you activities to explore our theme and get us thinking about how and where we live.

  • June Monthly Gathering: Religious Literacy for Nones
In June we will be revisiting a topic from one of our more popular assemblies: religious literacy for “nones.” Religious ideas shape much of human history, from abolitionists and prohibitionists to the Branch Davidians. By engaging with religious people in the context of actually understanding the religious contexts which inform their worldviews, religious “nones” are better able to live better with their neighbors and wonder more. Biography: Ben Buckmaster is a professional software engineer. He has a bachelor’s degree in religion and computer science from Coe College. His religion coursework focused on western and American religion. Outside of work life, he enjoys tabletop and online gaming, reading, and occasional travel.

  • Monthly Gathering: Your Life, Your Story
Join us for our monthly Sunday Assembly! Once a month we get together to celebrate life, socialize, and learn how to Live Better, Help Often, and Wonder More. What’s your story? Everyone has one. Maybe you want to find a way to tell it to someone important to you. Maybe you want to put it all down on paper and try to publish it. Or maybe you just want a new way to tell an old tale at your next social event. Whatever your aim, this hybrid talk/workshop will encourage you to take a story from your own life and explore new ways to put it into words in an open, supportive environment. We’ll play with words, experiment with structure, and learn a little about ourselves and each other along the way. Whittier Strong is a Pushcart-nominated writer and educator whose nonfiction has appeared in The Rumpus, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, The Good Men Project, and elsewhere. He is completing an MFA in nonfiction at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks while residing in Minneapolis. Our band will have a few songs to share about storytelling, plus we'll have a variety of readings, videos, and get-to-know-you activities to explore our theme and get us thinking about how to tell our own stories.
