What we're about

While this group is primarily focused on hiking, we also enjoy other forms of outdoor fun such as canoeing, biking, kayaking, camping and backpacking.... and a variety of special events including concerts, beach parties, museum, garden, art and holiday walks.

Our success is based in part on our ability to increase the fun factor of outdoor events, often including a social activity such as picnics that include food and beverage. Our organizers also design conditioning hikes that are intended to enhance aerobic fitness and endurance. Our group has peaked virtually all the major mountains in Southern California, including Mt. Whitney. We strive to offer the most fun and scenic outdoor activities available to residents of Orange County.... events that are both in and out of area.

Our group is diverse, including young/middle/senior ages, singles and couples, and a mix of people with differing racial/ethnic/cultural/religious/political backgrounds. The unity of the Sunset Hikes Meetup centers on our shared love of fun, outdoor activities.

We do NOT ask for donations to support our administrative costs or charitable pursuits, however we do ask that you actively and enthusiastically participate in our events. So come on out! Make new friends, get some exercise, and enjoy the great outdoors. We are all about having fun!

Check out the "Our Calendar" tab for a schedule of upcoming activities. We look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon....

We welcome you to the Sunrise to Sunset Hiking family!

Night Hike in Modjeska Canyon up Harding Truck Trail

Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary

!! DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS HIKE UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO ATTEND !! We have limited space and it is inconsiderate to others on the waiting list. Night Hike in Modjeska Canyon... A perfect way to celebrate TGIF with friends! DEPARTURE TIME: We depart at 6 PM. Please arrive ten minutes early to provide time for an orientation and introductions. ABOUT THIS HIKE: The hike starts at the trail head for the Harding Truck Trail across from the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary on Modjeska Canyon Road. The trail is well maintained and climbs steadily along a ridge through scrub oak, manzanita, and coastal sage into the Cleveland National Forest. We'll hike for 45-60 minutes stopping at about the two mile mark for a potluck dinner. BYOB (beverage) and appetizers to share. The views from our mountain top picnic tables extends on a clear day over neighboring ridge lines to Newport Coast, Palos Verdes Peninsula and Catalina Island. Following a leisurely picnic dinner, we return on the same route about two miles to the trail head and parking area. ABILITY LEVEL: Beginner to Intermediate. We hike at a slow pace taking in the views as we go. This can be a difficult hike due to the 600 foot elevation gain, although the trail itself is not technical. DIRECTIONS: From Interstate 5, take the El Toro Road exit in Lake Forest. Head North up El Toro Road towards the mountains. At Cook's Corner, El Toro Road turns into Santiago Canyon Road. Three miles past Cook's, turn right on Modjeska Canyon Road. Remain on Modjeska Canyon Road (don't turn on Modjeska Grade Road) passing the Modjeska Fire Station and continuing until arriving at the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary. Parking for the Harding Truck Trail head is located adjacent to and just beyond the Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary. The trail head is across the road from the paved designated parking area. To reduce parking congestion at Tucker, car pooling is advised. This is privately arranged through Meetup event comments usually meeting at 5:45 PM at the Santiago Canyon/Modjeska Canyon intersection. ADDITIONAL NOTES: 1) Select hikes/events at your ability level or below. 2) Bring extra water to hydrate before and during the hike. 3) Daylight hiking on the Harding Truck Trail offers limited shade, so bring hat and sun screen. 4) Bring charged cell phone, personal first aid kit, whistle and flash light. 5) Wear trail shoes with traction given the steep and rocky nature of the trail. 6) Although not available at the trail head, rest rooms are located at the park adjacent to the Modjeska Fire Station. 7) Select another hiker as a buddy and do not leave a fellow hiker alone on the trail. 8) Report any trail safety concerns to the event host. DISCLAIMER: Group organizer and assistant organizers assume no liability; hike at your own risk. By being a member of this group you hereby agree to assume all risks and liability related to or resulting from any group functions.
