ABOUT THE HIKE: We take a three mile round trip hike to a secluded palm tree oasis on the north end of Joshua Tree National Park. The single tract trail ascends uphill with approximately 300 feet of vertical gain and loss (twice!) with increasingly beautiful views of the surrounding desert. Red Barrel cacti line the trail. At the half way point, the trail descends toward the oasis. The 49 palm trees were planted by miners to mark the spring that now irrigates the trees, a herd of big horn sheep and other wildlife. Within the oasis, we can sit beside the pools in the shadow of the palms and contemplate our good hiking fortunes. Bring snacks for our rest stop under the Palms. This is one of the most beautiful hikes in Joshua Tree!
FOLLOWING THE HIKE: Hungry and thirsty hikers can continue the day's adventure with lunch at the Joshua Tree Saloon located on Highway 62, at 61835 Twenty-nine Palms Highway, Joshua Tree, CA. A link to the Joshua Tree Saloon web site can be found here:
Hikers will have the additional option of camping Saturday evening at Cottonwood Springs in JTNP, scheduled as a separate Meetup event.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE TRAILHEAD:
From OC, take Interstate 10 east toward Palm Springs.... past Highway 111 to Palm Springs, exit onto Highway 62 toward the town of Twenty Nine Palms.... proceed approximately eleven miles past the town of Twenty Nine Palms.... turn south (right) on Canyon Road that turns into Forty Nine Palms Canyon Road.... drive 1.7 miles from Highway 62 to the parking lot at road's end. Restrooms are available at the trailhead.
From Cottonwood Springs in JTNP, take Pinto Basin Road north.... turn right on Park Blvd (Park Blvd. turns into Utah Trail).... pass the Oasis Visitor Center and exit the park.... turn left on Hwy. 62 and proceed approximately four miles.... turn left on Canyon Road that turns into Forty Nine Palms Canyon Road and continue 1.7 miles to the end of the road.... and the trailhead parking lot.
