ABOUT THE HIKE: Riley Wilderness Park is a 540 acre reserve containing two intermittent creeks, rolling hills of coastal sage and grassland, and old groves of western sycamores and coastal live oaks. We will see it all in a 4 mile loop hike that will include a climb to an overlook called Skink Vista Point. Trails on our route will include a mix of Wagon Wheel Canyon, Pheasant Run, Mule Deer, Vista Ridge, Oak Canyon, Horned Toad, and Sycamore Loop. Expect several hundred feet of elevation gain/loss. The hike will be done at a moderate pace, with regrouping at trail junctions. We will be returning to the trailhead parking area for our brunch picnic.
This is a OC Park that requires a $3 day use parking fee. You may use one dollar bills, Visa/Master cards, or an OC annual park pass. Dogs are not allowed in this wilderness park.
ABOUT THE PICNIC: Please bring food to share for our potluck picnic at oak tree shaded tables located next to the trailhead parking area. You will NOT be carrying picnic items on the hike. BYOB (beverage) This is an alcohol restricted area. We will exercise adult discretion and Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From the 5 Freeway, exit Oso Parkway heading inland or east.... stay on Oso for approximately six miles turning right into the Riley Wilderness Park (50 feet before Oso dead ends into Coto de Caza Drive).
