ABOUT THE HIKE: We tour of the Huntington Library's famed Botanical Gardens. The Library is the former residence of Henry Edwards Huntington [masked]) a business visionary that established the early Los Angeles transportation system, including ownership of the Pacific Electric and Los Angeles Railroad Companies. The Library and its art collection opened to the public on his death in 1928. It is home to a vast collection of art and documents including the "Blue Boy" painting, the original copy of the Gutenberg Bible, and a photographic archive of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Our "hike" will be through the 120 acre botanical gardens, having a collection of more than a dozen themes and 15,000 plant varieties, including the Australian Garden, Camellia Collection, Children's Garden, Desert Garden, Subtropical and Jungle Garden, Herb Garden, Japanese Garden, Lily Ponds, Palm Garden, Rose Garden, Shakespeare Garden, and Chinese garden. These gardens are world class. The Chinese Garden for example is the largest Chinese garden outside of China. with beautiful manmade lakes, pavilions and connecting bridges. Expect about two hours of walk time through the gardens, using a variety of stairs, ramps, paved and dirt trails. We will complete our tour back at the entry pavilion for a potluck picnic brunch.
ADMISSION: Regular weekend admission is $25 for adults and $21 for seniors over 65. We will meetup at the main Library entrance. The Huntington opens at 10 AM, so please arrive early, purchase your ticket, and be ready to hike at 10:30 AM.
ABOUT THE PICNIC: Please bring food to share for our potluck brunch. BYOB (beverage) This may be an alcohol restricted area so adult discretion is advised. The location of our picnic area will be adjacent to the parking area, so there will be no need to carry picnic items on our hike.
AFTER THE PICNIC: You will be free to continue a self-guided tour of the Huntington Library Mansion and its amazing collection of art and rare books.
DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From Orange County, take the 57 Freeway north to the 210 Freeway.... From the 210, exit at Sierra Madre Boulevard in Pasadena and head south.... Turn right on California Boulevard and proceed to Allen Avenue.... Turn left on Allen Avenue and proceed two blocks to the Huntington Allen gate. Parking is free. We will meetup at the main Library visitor center entrance at the fountain in the courtyard flanked by ticketing/restroom/bookstore/coffee shop.
