***No Beginners please. Due to distance, pace and elevation gain, this hike is rated as intermediate. We hike as a group and stop at hilltops and junctions to ensure the group stays together. If you are an exceptianatley fast or slow hiker and have trouble staying with a group, this may not be the hike for you.***

Distance / Time: 7-8 miles / 3 -3 ½ Hours

Elevation Gain: 1,000 Feet

Departure Time: 7:00 AM. This hike will start at the designated time. Please arrive 10 minutes early for parking and introductions.

About This Hike: Lying peacefully in East Orange alongside the Santiago Creek, the 1,269-acre Santiago Oaks Regional Park is a nature lover's paradise. However, due to recent fires, this area has been badly damaged. This will be my first hike into this area since the fires. We will see first hand what damage the fires caused and, I am told, we will observe the beginnings of new growth in the park. We will hike a combination of single-track trails and fire roads. This hike offers some good cardio workouts and a good cross section of the area. At about the halfway point we will stop in Irvine Park for a rest and snack break. You will also have the opportunity to use the restroom here before we begin our return trip. This hike offers very little shade, so be sure to dress appropriately, bring adequate water, sunscreen and a hat.

Directions: From the 55 Fwy, exit at Katella Ave and go east. Drive two miles to Cannon St and turn left. Go ½ mile to Serrano and turn right. Continue on Serrano for 3.0 miles to Hidden Canyon and turn right. (Hidden Canyon has no signal and is difficult to see. It is the name of that housing community. Look to the right about 100 yards and you will see a wall with “Hidden Canyon” on it). Drive to the end where the street is a “T” intersection at Overlook Terrace. This is the trailhead, so park here.

NOTE: This is a residential neighborhood. Please be considerate when parking and keep the noise to a minimum.
