Dear Sunrise to Sunset Hikers,

Congratulations! We are now a hiking community of over 15,000 members. Our growth from a thousand to fifteen thousand hikers in four years has been incredible.

But having 15,000 members is not what is really remarkable about our hiking group, because meetup tells us that about 12,000 of our members are not actively hiking. We call it the "Merlot Moment" when someone with a glass of wine alone on a Saturday night clicks join, but never actually RSVPs one of our events. If you happen to be one of our inactive members, we are reaching out to invite you to join our community in something other than name only. Check out our calendar and RSVP an event here:

What is truly remarkable about us is the three thousand members that are active. YOU have made us the most popular Meetup hiking group in the Meetup system. One of the reasons why we are hosting so many hikers is because we have over three dozen amazing event organizers that are hosting more events than any other Meetup hiking group in the world. But I have come to understand that what distinguishes us as a Meetup community is not lots of hikers going to lots of events...

The reason we have lots of hikers going to lots of events is because of the nature of the group itself. We pride ourselves on our diversity, i.e. cultural, racial, gender, relationship, ethic diversity. Within that amazing diversity has developed an amazing sense of belonging, of family. Our people come to hike, but also to be with their hiking friends. It is heartening and gratifying to see all the wonderful friendships that have developed within our community. And on a more personal level, we see the many individual stories of people finding our group and finding a cause for personal transformation, be it fitness, friends, fun, adventure, and/or exposure to the great outdoors.

I guess what I am trying to say here is that there is something very remarkable about this 15,000 number that goes way beyond 15,000 for some very remarkable hikers. It's not just that we together make the outdoors fun, we hike with heart!
