June Book Club - The Martian

For June, we'll be reading The Martian by Andy Weir. This is a recent sci-fi book about one man trying to survive on Mars after being left by the rest of his crew assumed he was dead.

"Apollo 13 meets Cast Away in this grippingly detailed, brilliantly ingenious man-vs-nature survival thriller, set on the surface of Mars.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first men to walk on the surface of Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first man to die there.

It started with the dust storm that holed his suit and nearly killed him, and that forced his crew to leave him behind, sure he was already dead. Now he's stranded millions of miles from the nearest human being, with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his food would be gone years before a rescue mission could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to get him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. But will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Join us for fun conversation, even if you don't finish the book (though of course, it's easier to join in if you do). Be sure to bring future book suggestions. The book after this will be fantasy, but we always add things people are interested in to our discussion page for future reference.

Location Note:
Book club meetings are held at my house, where I live with two 1 year olds and two cats. If this would prevent you from coming, please reach out to me so we can try to find a different location.

In response to the email, I would vote having them on the weekend. I know I might not get much say since, due to family and now work, I haven't been able to attend a single meeting l year but I know that, personally, I have a higher chance of being able to go if it's on a weekend day though I'm sure for others it's the opposite. Since having to go back to work, I work nearly 95% of Friday nights so that's just my two cents. I'd really like to get to go though! I might have to ask for Friday off for the next one if I can get it....

Unfortunately I am busy this Friday, but I managed to skim a bunch of the book at a bookstore (shhh) and it seemed really good! Have fun!

I'm reading the original (which is a little more condensed than the novelization).
The beginning was boring, but it starts to move pretty fast. The original is still up at archive.org.

Cool! I'm somewhere around chapter 21. It does move really fast, I read almost all of it one day!

We are taking my daughter on a college visit so I won't be able to attend. I hope to make the next one.

So sorry! I just am NOT getting reading done these days! There is no way I will be on track this time. I hope to jump in with the next one.
