Maybe the hype is running ahead of the reality of what business are doing on the ground. But this definitely IS an area you need to think about as a leader in technology. We will be welcoming some experts in Big Data, Data Science and Business Intelligence - and avoiding salesy stuff and the hot air/BS that goes with that.

Venue: Tank Streak Labs. This is a really awesome venue (we were there on the debugging-diversity night) and its very centrally located.

We have 3 speakers whose backgrounds are varied, with a tech founder, a national figure in big data, and a leader in data at a large online retailer.

After some socializing, there will be talks, then a panel discussion involving the audience, then a bit more food and beer.

We will all need to head off home (or to the pub next door) at 8:30pm rather than 930 on this night....just in case you want to call your chauffeur in advance :)

The Speakers:

Talk 1: Ian Opperman

Ian has worked on real petabyte-scale data and has built a national reputation in this area, featured in SMH http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/business-it/big-data-public-good-and-what-rozettas-ian-oppermann-did-next-20150216-13g5fu.html , on the radio http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/futuretense/the-big-picture-on-big-data/4673946 and he is the Chief Data Scientist for NSW regularly adding thought-leadership articles on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ianoppermann

In this talk Brent will outline the ongoing importance of classic data warehousing and the way in which these simple concepts are still important in this modern world of data buzzphrases.
