To keep the right people you need to treat them right. But is it simply about free breakfasts , table tennis tables and beer on tap? For a start what if your tech company can't afford that?

And secondly surely culture goes deeper than lollies and good coffee (though... we need to put on record we are a unequivocal supporter of good coffee here at Syd Tech Leaders!)

And what is a high performing culture - what does that look like and how do you instil it? Its not about being a workaholic...Culture is about how you treat people, and whether they have a sense of purpose, and what "we're about" and what happens on the ground day to day.

Culture matters even if its a slippery fish to grab hold of and define clearly. And hot tech companies have reputations for some of the best culture (chefs to cook you dinner) and worst culture (think sexist, arrogant, etc...)

Tonight we've got TWO in depth views from some of the most interesting tech leaders in Sydney and Australia, a series of mini-talks and then the irreplaceable Syd Tech Leaders panel. Don't miss this one..... its going to be one of the best nights we've ever done.

The Evening:
15 min - Owen interviews Matt Barrie on how he has built a great culture at Freelancer and tried to retain it and evolve it in a competitive industry. Matt is well known in the tech industry , and Freelancer is a global business

15 min - Paula Ngov interviews Brett Iredale the CEO of JobAdder on how he has built a great culture and tried to retain it and evolve it in a competitive industry. Brett has been leading software businesses related to hiring and HR for many years and recently expanded into the USA.

20 min - View from the trenches: 4 super-quick 4 min talks on "what great culture looks like, and what to avoid" by 4 very different people - we have a developer, a team-leader, a CTO in a tech product company and a VP of getting things done:

[1] the inimitable Kris Howard - VP of Getting Things Done at Canva who definitely cares about good tech culture:

[2] David Banham - CTO of Prismatik has co-founded business and been in many CTO roles.

[3]Graeme Cooper has done a lot of CTO gigs but remains very hands-on coding day to day. Graeme has done the small agile start up, and is now helping large corporate banks change and become more agile. Recent experience of setting up off-shore dev-centres are something he will draw on

[4] Brett Porter is Head of Architecture at SafetyCulture Pty Ltd, Chairman at Apache Software Foundation and passionate about software.

Then the Syd Tech Leaders panel of all 6 contributors, headed by Ted Tencza will engage with your questions and each others

Finally we'll get back to polishing off the food and drinks....
