1) Combining the Powers of SEM and BIO for Improving CSS
Ryan Yu | |

CSS is easy but the easiness can cause messy code. Throughout the talk, I will be talking about what we should consider when coding (SEM) and how to improve CSS (BIO) so we can avoid the messy code.

Ryan Yu is a Senior UI Engineer at Campaign Monitor and he is very passionate about architecting/engineering UI and also front-end technologies especially around React, Web animation, HTML Canvas and Three.js. He also loves playing ping pong and basketball.

2) Pivoting your career
Georgina Robilliard |

Pivot is a framework former Googler Jenny Blake developed to help people use the skills they have built through experience to seek new challenges and change their careers. After spending 7 years working behind the scenes in the recruitment industry, it was time for a pivot of my own! In this talk I'll give an overview of the Pivot framework and how it can help you decide when, how and where to pivot, as well as sharing a little of my personal experience along the way.

Georgina loves helping people who are passionate at what they do succeed at work every day. Formerly of Lookahead Search, currently Head of People and Culture at Insured By Us. Wine, cheese and sausage dog enthusiast.

3) Everything you didn’t want to know about layout
Mike Riethmuller | |

When we load an HTML document, there is a lot that happens behind the scenes before the browser can render this content correctly. Have you ever wanted an overview of this process? Probably not! Come and find out everything you didn't want to know about layout. Get serious answers to all the browsers mysteries including:
- How the DOM is like a map of Disneyland,
- What the box-model has to hide,
- How stacking contexts, stack up.

A 20min over the top view of everything that happens in ~200ms. You may leave more confused than when you arrived!

Mike is an independent web developer from Australia who has worked on some of Australia’s largest websites as well as some of the smallest community sites. When he’s not building websites or writing about building websites, he likes to experiment with code. Mike loves learning new things and finding techniques that challenge what we think is best practice. When he’s not exploring the digital landscape, he likes to explore the world. Currently trying to find a way to do both those things at the same time.
