  • Sydney VR Meetup #10 - Going Mainstream

    AIE

    A$5.00

Going Mainstream Playstation VR launches this month, a wide raft of new hardware providers are emerging from around the globe, and Christmas is just around the corner. This year, VR is going to be on every good boy and girl's wishlist. But w‡ith new hardware comes demand for new content, so if you're building, prototyping, or designing and want to demo your work please get in touch. Or if you're more into the business side of things, you've got some burning questions, or you're just generally enthusiastic, come along and check out the latest content from ourselves and the Sydney VR Community. New Event Space at 33 Mountain Street Due to space restrictions we've moved from our previous location at Fishburners (and another big thank you to everyone there for hosting us in the past). From this month we'll be hosted by AIE, Australia's most awarded 3D animation, game design and visual FX educator. We'll be keeping the $5 event fee to cover the cost of pizza, but please only RSVP if you're absolutely sure you're coming. VR Demos If you are a developer, come along and show the community your content. If you own a VR device and would like to show other people your favourite piece of content, please bring it along! We will be bringing several GearVR's, the yet-to-be-released Oculus Touch controllers as well as the HTC Vive and Playstation VR. More details coming as we put it all together. Thanks

  • Sydney VR Meetup #9 - In the Wild

    Fishburners (Sydney's Tech Startup Hub)

    A$5.00

The next Sydney VR meetup will be just after the official local launches of the Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift, and perhaps, the HTC Vive. There will be a lot to talk about. I've been told by a lot of you that you want to see more local demos. If you're working on a VR project of any kind, please bring it along to show off - even if it's early stage! If you're keen to demo, send me an email to [masked] or shoot me a private message through Meetup. We will have local developers showing their awesome work. Some of them include: • Matt Arvin Villas Cabanag will show is GearVR game "Warblocks" "A real time strategy game with new control schemes designed for VR" • Ryan Alcock has also a new version of his game to show • Our very own Mark Schramm will be bringing a new version of his HTC Vive game "GravLab" " 'The Incredible' Machine meets 'Portal' " But VR is more than just games. Come along and try the immersive video content of local content producers and apps for business, education and research. The Sydney VR group is now so big that we're going to have to cap attendance to 70 people, which is the maximum capacity of the venue (and that doesn't include the space we need to run the Vives!). The $5 cover charge was a great success at the last event with enough pizza for everyone, so we will be doing this from now on. Please RSVP only if your sure you can attend. Looking forward to seeing you all at the next Sydney VR Meetup! Regards, Kain & Mark

  • Sydney VR Meetup #8 - The Year of VR

    Fishburners (Sydney's Tech Startup Hub)

    A$5.00

2016 IS THE YEAR OF VIRTUAL REALITY It's no secret to anyone remotely interested in Virtual Reality that 2016 is the year that it all starts to happen. Developers are huddled over their desktop, HMD's and capture devices, madly testing code and preparing their games, apps and experiences for launch dates unknown... The Samsung Gear VR is likely to be first out of the gate and they should own the premium mobile space with their excellent hardware. Oculus are believed to be preparing something in the early part of the new year and it's my prediction that we'll get news of the official Rift launch date at CES, and who knows, we might even get official dates for the Touch and Constellation hardware too. The HTV Vive is planned to launch in April 2016 with 7000 kits going to selected developers and community members in January. We have the 2015 dev kits at our meetup, so join us and try them out! And Sony? Well, they've got christmas PS4 bundles to sell by the boatload before they hit the market with the Playstation VR in the middle of the year. VR is officially about to go gangbusters. BACK TO BASICS So, we're proposing a bit of a back-to-basics approach to the next meetup. We're pulling back on the amount of talks and panels, and we're encouraging anyone with a Gear VR, Oculus DK2 or Rift, Vive or Playstation VR to bring along their kit and share the love. We're going to use the stage for anyone developing something, to talk about and share what they're doing. TRY THE HTC VIVE We have HTC Vives! Come and join us to try the "gold standard" in consumer VR hardware. DEVELOPERS, SHOW YOUR STUFF If you're developing an app, game or experience - no matter what stage of development - this meetup is about showing off your stuff. LOSE YOUR VRGINITY If you're curious about trying VR for the first time, or you're keen to find about developing for VR or want to meet others looking to do the same, this is your chance to be a part of our growing community. A SMALL FEE FOR A FEEDING The group is now getting so big that pizza costs are getting out of hand. We're going to start charging a $5 entry fee to cover the costs of Pizza so we can afford to buy enough for everyone. START THE NEW YEAR WITH VR 18 JANUARY[masked]:30PM - 9PM Fishburners 608 Harris Street, Ultimo So lock in the date. More details to come. Developers, Publishers, VR studios - please message me if you're interested in exhibiting and we'll make sure everyone gets promoted. Cheers, Kain Tietzel Mark Schramm

  • Sydney VR Meetup #7 - The Final Medium

    Fishburners (Sydney's Tech Startup Hub)

It's been nearly a year since I had my VR re-birth at the Sydney VR Meetup last December. It was just days after Samsung had released the Gear VR and I squealed with delight as I tried "Blu" and the Cirque Du Soleil demos. I hadn't tried VR since Dactyl Nightmares in the 90's, and at that moment, I knew I had to drop everything and start making Virtual Reality. It was this meetup group that changed my life, and I guarantee you, you will witness some really amazing VR experiences and see some amazing tech when you come along to this event. Bring a friend - they will thank you for it. We're still putting together a list of demos and presenters, but here are the highlights for what you can expect: Meetup Highlights (so far) • Having returned from a triumphant launch at Techcrunch's Disrupt, Will Scully-Power is going to show us Vision Board VR (http://www.visionboardvr.com/). • SVRM member Peter Koch is going to share insights from his attendance at this years Oculus Connect 2 conference. • Start VR (https://startvr.co) will be showing off their first VR property app and Transmedia Entertainment (http://transmedia-entertainment.com) will be demoing a new property sales VR demo too! • And last but not least, Mark Schramm is going to demonstrate the HTC Vive (http://www.htcvr.com/). We'll let you know how we will manage the demonstrations as i'm sure everyone is going to want to have a go. Looking for more Demos Write us a private message or email [masked] if you're keen to discuss how it all works. All the best, Kain & Mark

  • Sydney Virtual Reality Meetup #5 – Meta Glasses

    Fishburners (Sydney's Tech Startup Hub)

Time to kick off the year with some VR and AR fun! We have Esther Lekeu of Meta (https://www.spaceglasses.com/) providing a presentation, unboxing and live demonstration of the Meta 1 Developer Kit (https://www.spaceglasses.com/products) glasses, an advance Augmented Reality glasses with built in head tracking. The kit will also be available for others to test out after the demonstration. Meta also has an Australian co-founder and just recently raised $23 million in January. Mark Schramm is our generous host for the event and he’s going to go through the latest on the OpenGear (http://www.open-gear.com/), the open source mobile VR head-mounted display. Mark will also be demonstrating a 3D printed prototype of the OpenGear. There should be plenty of Oculus Rifts, Samsung Gear VRs, gesture devices and VR demos to try out bought along by other members. Please bring yours along if you can. Beers and Pizza will be provided too. See you all soon! Cheers, Chris and Mark

  • Sydney Virtual Reality Meetup #4 - Samsung Gear VR

    Fishburners (Sydney's Tech Startup Hub)

Lets end the year with one more dose of VR goodness! We've got an exciting event happening, with Samsung themselves coming in to demonstrate the Gear VR (http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/gearvr/gearvr_features.html) with the Galaxy Note 4, and they will be doing a Q&A with the audience. Ryan Alcock, creator of Super Mega Mega (http://blunt-instrument.com/dev/supermegamega/), an awesome 2D platformer in VR, will be speaking about his experiences. Mark Schramm is returning once again to give us a rundown on how to build your own advanced VR smartphone device, more to the level of the Gear VR as opposed to Google Cardboard. He is the developer of DarkField (http://darkfield-vr.com/), the VR space shooter that recently successfully completed its Kickstarter campaign. We've also been donated a bunch of Google Cardboard (https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/) kits to give out as prizes through a VR Quiz Off, courtesy of VRV (http://www.virtualrealityventures.com.au/), so get prepping on your VR know-hows! Virtual Reality Ventures (VRV) is a leading VR development company specializing in B2B applications. Finally, if time permits, I will be demonstrating the new MYO gesture armband along with a tutorial on how to develop on it with the Oculus Rift. There should be plenty of Rifts, gesture devices and VR demos to try out bought along by other members. Beers, Red Bull and Pizza will be provided too. One last thing, I've just acquired a Parrot AR Drone 2.0 which I'll also bring along, so I'd like to propose a fun challenge out there to see if anyone can hook it up with the Rift (or Gear VR?) on the day and fly it around the event room =O See you all on Tuesday! Cheers, Chris
