WALKING TOUR of the Historic BEACHWOOD & BRONSON CANYONs including SCI-FI CAVES

This will be a very special NON-movie viewing group morning-through-lunchtime event, but well worth attending and will literally be a special, one-of-a-kind chain of morning-long events involving BOTH Hollywood history of the Bronson Canyon & Beachwood Canyon locales AND walking exercise. Please wear walking shoes, comfortable clothing including a removable light jacket or sweater and water bottle (and light snack such as trail mix).

At 9am we will FIRST congregate at the Victor Bene's Bakery inside the Gelson's Market at the corner Franklin Avenue & Bronson for coffee & fresh danish (or fresh fruit if you are more inclined).

Then SECOND from about 9:30-9:50am Jono will lead a brief, informal 20 minute walking tour of Franklin Village including exterior "walk bys" of such historical Hollywood landmarks as the Château Élysée, the Villa Carlotta and the Belle Tower apartment buildings.

Read more interesting gossip about the famed Château Élysée at the following weblink:

THIRD at about 10am we will then return to our individual parked cars at the Gelson's parking lot then caravan up nearby Canyon Drive to the parking lot near the end of the road inside the southwest entry gate of Griffith Park. We will meet at the dirt parking lot and wait for everyone to arrive after which we will proceed on a walk up the the famed Sci-Fi Caves--which have been used as a movie location for countless Hollywood movies (including--among many--the "Bat Cave" from the old Batman TV series).

After the 20 minute walk to and from the caves, we will then walk up a small portion of the walking trail toward the Hollywood sign (which will probably take an additional 45 minutes round trip). This portion of the walk is considered a beginner's trail and is not steep, but there is a steady grade that might prove slightly challenging to those without any past hiking experience, but you can take the trail at your own pace and if you decide you have had enough you can always stop and rest then allow the rest of us to go a little bit further.

FOURTH at about Noon we will return to our cars and further caravan to the nearby Beachwood Cafe on Beechwood Drive in historic "Hollywoodland" where at about 12:30pm we will have brunch/lunch as a group. (We may have to wait for multiple tables during busy Saturday breakfast/lunch hours, so please be patient).

Beachwood Village originally included a neighborhood market and small drug store with a soda fountain that later became the Beachwood Cafe coffee shop (which Barry Manilow once wrote a popular song for in the 1970's) then again later became the Village Coffeeshop before being remodeled and re-christened again in 2012 as the Beachwood Cafe (which celebrates its one year anniversary of its current ownership next month). Parking: Parking in Beachwood Village, as with most popular L.A. destinations, is somewhat limited, so be prepared to walk a block or so to the restaurant.

It was great fun and quite an education.

We had a number of surprises including the unannounced inclusion of Villa Carlotta historian/resident Don Paul--who we wish to thank for his extreme graciousness--and an also unannounced inside glimpse of the recently refurbished landmark Hollywood Tower apartment building and its elaborate, multi-level roof garden areas.

Jono provided a spectacular event! Everything was so well organized. And there were some nice surprises along the way. As usual, members were open and friendly. It was a wonderful outing for a beautiful Saturday afternoon.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy. I am also sorry that I thought this was happening tomorrow. Hopefully I will finally have a chance to meet you all at the Art Deco Society "Lost Horizon" screening.

Didn't get the updated email. I cannot go on Saturday. I hope you have another Beachwood/Bronson hike. Looks fantastic!

    February 22, 2013

  • Jono

Don't worry, if we max out on our RSVPs then I will make sure to repeat this outing within another couple of months. But it will be hard to go around with much more than 12 people--hard for people to hear me talk, get spaces at the restaurant, etc.

I sent an updated e-mail saying that Sunday 3/3 was a typo! sorry for the confusion, but you should have gotten that updated follow up e-mail and the event is listed on our web page CORRECTLY as SATURDAY 3/2.
