Goyt Valley & Shining Tor

Good walks around Erwood Reservoir include spectacular views, woodland & water, so plenty of reflections. we could climb Shining Tor, which gives big views to the West, with the Cities of Manchester, and Liverpool, the Mersey, and if it's clear, you can see Snowdonia. To the East, you will look back at Kinder Scout, and most of the High Peak. There is ample parking, and buses from Buxton pass close by.

It was a nice walk but we were only 4 person. We did wait until 10:35 at the car park opposite the sailing club so I hope we did not missed anyone? And we did not make it to the Shining Tor, my maps were rubbish and we took the wrong path...we did found a nice waterfall though...:O)

A great day out. Glad to meet you Joanne, Rubi and Steve.. I have uploaded the better of my many photographs. I think between the four of us we shot almost 1000 pictures. It was brilliant sunshine, beautiful light for photography and not really too cold.
My pictures are mostly from my SAMSUNG Galaxy SII phone. Good fun experimenting with little used features on the camera app.

Lucie and Theo are not as active this morning. LOL. I think we wore the doggies out yesterday. They ran and ran, it was difficult to catch them still for a picture and many other shots were spoilt with a strange ghostly figure whizzing through the viewfinder.

Sorry guys.... I got down to A617 and got a flat tyre. As I have just bought the vehicle and not had the need to change a tyre, I did not know I had NOT got the tool to undo the security nuts holding the wheels on. Called out RAC and like me he could not get the nuts off. He then called for a low loader to take me to a garage or back home to a garage to have me nuts cuts off, painful if you get it wrong. I took the second option to return home where at least if things went wrong i could sort it. Nuts cut off, 4 new nuts put on, tyre repaired, and back on the road for 14:30... What a day. Was a nice walking day as well and I bet you had a good time. I did get a lot of text from people who could not attend but I was not in a position to pass this info on. Im just sorry I missed out, but glad I made loads of coffee. Another time.

I have been looking at a few 4-5 miles walk options (near Errwood Reservoir). I will bring my maps on Saturday for anyone who do not fancy the bigger walk, and we can decide which one we would like to do...?

Looking to make more in 2013, of my desire to take stunning photographs. I'll be there on the 16th Feb. Look forward to meeting some new faces and having a good chinwag over a pint of ale after some gentle exerrcise. (4-5 miles is enough for me).

    January 13, 2013

    • Chris L.

I don't know the area. But once there will sniff out the nearest purveyor of real ale to help us compare notes in comfort.

The Shady Oak Inn just up the A5004 looks to be, on initial investigation, the closest to the venue.

Hoping to make this event! Would prefer the shorter walk. Does anyone know about buses? C

    January 13, 2013

I have also put a screen print of the outward journey in the files area of this site http://files.meetup.c...

      January 22, 2013

    • Richard C

I imagine the walk from the main road where the bus stops down to the car park would be about 15 minutes or so- so the start of the walk would just need to be delayed a little to allow time for you to get there.

Looks like the best place to meet up is ERRWOOD RESERVOIR CAR PARK.....
Look down a few remarks from Carol and there is a link.

Thats ok guys. Lets meet up at 10 and see what everyone wants to do. If there are a few who want the full walk then we have a group. If we have a few who want 1/2 a walk then we have a group. I dont have a whip lol, and this is a photographic group NOT a hiking group.
All we need now are numbers.
Happy new year all and hope we get some nice pics.

I really don't want to walk 8 miles. My interest is in photography on this walk not a hike! 4 miles preferably.

I'm fine with the start time - but there's another 18 who need to reply eh? I actually wasn't suggesting the 8 mile walk - just the starting/meet up point. 8 miles is quite grim/hard work for the likes of me ... I prefer something shorter, but will go with whatever is decided. Going around one reservoir instead of 2 could be a solution? Up to someone else to lead the walk as well as I wouldn't be any good at that! c

    December 31, 2012

  • Colin

ok then.... looks like we have a date AND a meet up place... how about a time? How about a 10am meet up for the start of the walk at 10:30? let me know if this is acceptable and then we can look at numbers. ps do we have a leader who knows the walk, or do we just follow the paths? I aint done many walk before. And is Andy bringing his para thing to get down quickly lol?

The following link gives directions to the Errwood Reservoir car park and describes an 8 mile walk from there - may be useful for deciding a meet up point? (I've cut an pasted the intro text underneath):
    http://www.knowledge.me.uk/walks/shining_tor.html

This walk in the Goyt Valley takes in Errwood and Fernilee Reservoirs, as well as climbing to the summit of Shining Tor, the highest point in this part of the Peak District. This is a fine ridge walk, with sweeping views in every direction, but particularly across the plains to the west and north towards Kinder. Ascent: 1,500ft/ 460m
    Length: 8.8 miles/ 14km

We start from the car park at the north western corner of Errwood Reservoir, at the junction between the lake side road and "The Street", the road that heads west from the lake.

Also, if you put Errwood Reservoir as your destination into Google Maps it gives you directions all the way up to 'The Street', so it pretty much shows you how to get there.
