What we're about

On or about the 15th we discuss a non-fiction book. Meetings are informal and an opportunity to connect with topical non-fiction books and the people who read them. Meeting time is 7:00-8 PM. Meeting location is at True Brew Barista, 3 Bicentennial Square, Concord, NH.

INSPIRATION AND APPLIED SCIENCE

Someone once said, "Knowledge isn't power until it is applied." Perhaps authors inspire us to take on new projects or new approaches to old projects by following new rules or un-following others. How have non-fiction books helped you think and act?

The following are some recent books in the limelight with some typical discussion questions and comments.

THE BUSINESS OF THE 21ST CENTURY, Robert Kiyosaki

This author talks a lot about real estate. Would Kiyosaki recommend house-flipping as a source of income? Would this author's teachings help or hinder an office career? A blue-collar career? Why are all of his books purple?

BORN TO RUN: A HIDDEN TRIBE, SUPERATHLETES, AND THE GREATEST RACE THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN, Christopher McDougall

After the book's release in 2009, minimalist shoes (shoes with little or no heel cushion) went from 3-10 percent of the running shoe market in the US in 2010. Through 2012 US sales of minimalist shoes have more than doubled since this book came out. http://www.runblogger.com/2012/05/state-of-running-shoe-market-first.html A Washington Post article from January 21, 2013 refuted the minimalist running style, and instead favored the style of some Kenyan runners who landed heel first. Before Nike and Vibram took over the minimalist running shoe market, Loco Running Shoes, of Newmarket, New Hampshire, sold a running shoe with a minimal heel drop. They were called running shoes. Can your company's product survive for years or decades in order to catch the next wave of consumer demand?

LIKE A VIRGIN: SECRETS THEY WON'T TEACH YOU AT BUSINESS SCHOOL, Richard Branson

When his businesses grow, does Branson centralize control towards himself? How does this book compare to other business books? Textbooks? What is the author presenting here other than business secrets? Can this thing be put in a bottle to sell to other entrepreneurs?

PAULA DEEN'S SOUTHERN COOKING BIBLE: THE NEW CLASSIC GUIDE TO DELICIOUS DISHES WITH MORE THAN 300 RECIPES, Paula Deen

Have you tried any of these recipes? What are their main characteristics? Is the author's culture and region reflected mostly in the recipes, the words, or the book design? What is the author selling here? Would you infuse your own culture and traditions into your business or product? By how much? Can your business lawyer-up at a moment's notice? Are book titles getting longer and longer?
