Leashed dogs welcome!

Join Peter, our event host, and other TO hiking members for a great hike near the ocean. This one gets great reviews from everyone.

The hike is approximately 7ish miles and would be called moderate to strenuous.

Elevation Gain: net 1100 feet

The hike up Solstice Canyon leads to Tropical Terrace, the ruins of a home built in the 1950s and destroyed by fire in 1982. The stone courtyard, garden terraces, stairways, and exotic tropical plants still remain. Near the ruins is Solstice Canyon Falls cascading 30 ft. over sandstone rocks. The hike up canyon on the Rising Sun Trail traverses the cliffs overlooking Solstice Canyon and the Pacific ocean.

After stopping at the Tropical Terrace, we will hike up the Sostomo Trail to the Deer Valley Loop Trail. The sweeping coastal views from the Deer Valley Loop Trail extend across the Santa Monica Bay.

The return route parallels Solstice Creek and passes by the Keller stone cottage, built around 1865 and believed to be the oldest existing stone building in Malibu. Matthew Keller, who built the house, had a vineyard called Rising Sun Vineyard. © Copyright Robert Stone Published by Day Hike Books. All Rights Reserved.

Please bring plenty of water (at a minimum 2 liters) for you and your dog. Sunscreen and hats as some of the trail is without shade.

DIRECTIONS: We will meet at the Rising Sun Trailhead, which is close to the second parking lot (near the amphitheater). From PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy or 1), turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. Corral Canyon Rd is between Malibu Canyon and Kanan-Dume Rd. on PCH.

Parking is free.
