Done with your holiday shopping and looking for some exercise and a way to reduce stress?
This is it! A group favorite-Boney Mountain Overlook. Something close to home and we'll be done early afternoon.
Follow the directions written below to get to the trailhead. Note: This is the Wendy/Potrero trailhead.
Boney Mountain Overlook Hike: See photos. http://www.meetup.com/TOaks-Hikers/calendar/7258119/
It gets very steep in some sections, but the views at the top are spectacular. It may be a little bit slippery on the rocks if it's damp in any way.
8.0 miles roundtrip, with a 1600-foot elevation gain.
Bring snacks and more water than you think you'll need(about 2 Liters). We'll find a spot at the top to have our snack break.
If we go at at decent pace, we should not be out more than 4.5 to 5 hours roundtrip.
This hike includes some breathtaking up-close views of the shear rock faces of Boney mountain. We'll hike from the Potrero Rd. parking lot to the Peace, Love, Joy sign near the old cabin site. From the monument/old cabin site, head south for about 1 mile to a stunning overlook of Boney Mountain, which is our turn-around point. You will see a bench like rock on the trail with an unforgettable view of the rock faces. Note that this last section of trail is very steep and it is not maintained, so use caution.
Make sure you have enough water. Some parts of this trail are very steep and a hiking/walking stick or poles are recommended, especially for the descent.
No restrooms at the trailhead.
Sorry, no dogs allowed as this hike includes a portion of the state park system.
Carpooling is recommended. Please leave comments in the "comments section" below to find ridesharing partners.
Directions to the trailhead:Wendy and Potrero Rd entrance: From the 101 in Newbury Park, exit Wendy Drive. Turn SW (towards the ocean) onto Wendy. Proceed all the way to the end of Wendy, as it ends at Portrero Rd. We will meet in the dirt parking lot on Portrero at the end of Wendy.
