Tour de Pierce Bike Event: 12 and 30 mile ride options

Local Bike Event: Tour de Pierce! (12 and 30 mile options)

June 21 update: if you haven't already registered I suggest ride morning registration ($18) which will be someplace in the parking lot.  Unlike my bike rides - which leave exactly on time, haha - this'll be a very relaxed start.  I plan to be there by 9:00am, my silver Subaru wagon parked against the usually-deserted parking lot east fence, but will be in no hurry whatever to head out.  I ride slowly, suspect our group will spread out as the ride goes on.  Ride morning registration is open 7:30-11:00am.  See you there!

This is NOT a Tacoma Mountaineer Singles bike ride. This is a typical one day bike event, one of thousands held annually around the U.S., which usually have 3-4 different route choices (from 25 to 100 miles).  Independent registration with Pierce County Parks required, either in advance or on ride morning; info below.

If you’ve never ridden an organized event ride this is a great first time experience; if you're a little worried about riding on roads this is a mellow introduction.  The 12 and 30 both look almost completely flat, almost entirely on low-traffic roads. $18 entry fee.

TMS Ride Leader Jim Harvey plans to do the 30 mile loop, but if anyone is trying this for the first time, plans to ride the 12 and wants support/encouragement, I'll be happy to do the shorter ride instead  :-)   I’m posting this for your information, hoping you’ll sign up and try this out. Ride start is at the Puyallup Fairgrounds Gold Parking lot; I’ll show up early in my trusty silver Subaru wagon for a 9:00am start. You may start any time, but I hope TMS riders will show up shortly before 9:00am, phone me so we can meet for the ride.

Hopefully we’ll have some folks show up for both the 12 and the 30; doing a ride like this with friends, new or old, is a lot of fun! Once you’ve done this you’ll know what events like this are like; dozens are held in our area every year. You’ll have taken your first step toward riding the STP, Tour de France, etc…

More info may be found at 2013 Tour de Pierce website:

or by Googling “2013 Tour de Pierce”.

Partial reprint from the ride website follows. If you have any questions please EM me at [masked], or phone me[masked]-6758. I hope to see you out there!!!

About the Ride

Tour de Pierce is a summer bicycle ride through central Pierce County for fitness and fun, promoting bicycle awareness and safety.

The ride begins at the Gold parking lot of the Washington State Fair in Puyallup and winds through Puyallup, Sumner and adjacent farm lands. A rest stop will offer light refreshments, entertainment and restrooms for riders.

Tour de Pierce riders are required to wear CPSC approved helmets. The course will be clearly marked with 'Dan Henry' symbols on the roadway. Riders will receive a map of the course the day of the ride.

The 12-mile route provides a flat, easy ride suitable for families and novice riders. A new 30-mile loop extends the ride past farms, flower fields and more scenic views of Pierce County's waterways and Mt. Rainier. The 50-mile course travels through parts of Puyallup, Sumner, South Prairie and Orting.

Everyone rode the 25 except Sue and I, who rode the 13. VERY pleasant for a road ride: not much traffic, finished before it got too hot, good course map and Dan Henrys, yummy rest stop with munchies. I hope everyone enjoyed it; from comments below it sounds like you did.

We'll be back to bike trail rides in July and August, may set the Tour d' Peaks (North Bend, off I-90) 25 miler late August as our next "organized tour - road ride".

Thanks to all who came! See you next time - Jim

Hi Jim, 99% sure I want to try the 30 mile. Will you be doing the hills or not? Don't think I am ready for hills yet.
