Jazz Under The Stars

Jazz Under the Stars: Steve Howland Trio, featuring Nate Omdal and Adam Kessler

PLU's annual Jazz Under the Stars summer concert series marks its fifteenth year next summer. The 2013 concert series, featuring the finest professional jazz talent in the Puget Sound region, will begin on Thursday, July 11 in the outdoor ampthitheater of the Mary Baker Russell Music Center on the PLU campus.

Bring your lawn chairs and your picnic food and come join me. (PLU is a dry campus. Bring the brie, leave the chablis!) The series is sponsored by the PLU music department and KPLU 88.5 FM.

The series is free to the public and runs Thursdays for six weeks, 7:00-9:00 p.m. Music faculty member Paul Tegels offers an intermission performance on the world-famous Fuchs pipe organ in our beautiful Lagerquist Hall. There is free coffee and stargazing after the last three concerts at PLU's Keck Observatory, weather permitting, courtesy of the PLU physics department. Speaking of weather, JUTS concerts are NEVER cancelled due to weather. On days with inclement weather, concerts will be held in Lagerquist Concert Hall of the Mary Baker Russell Music Center.

I go every year to this and Love it! Come Join Us!   Karen

Sponsored by 88.5 KPLU.

Cost: Free

Stephen Howland is a diverse composer and performer in jazz, classical, flamenco, and popular idioms. He has been a concert artist and clinician at music festivals, colleges, and guitar societies throughout the Western States. He has been featured on recordings as a guitar soloist with big band, classical and early music chamber musicians, and has written and been a studio guitarist for independent artists and bands. Dr. Howland teaches jazz and classical guitar at PLU and co-directs the PLU Guitar Festival. The Stephen Howland Trio features Nate Omdal on upright bass, and Adam Kessler on drums, playing standards and originals that reflect broad influences and interests. The trio is a wonderful melding of outstanding and distinct talents. Nate is an in-demand musician, busy as a bassist and with scoring and arranging work. He is a quintessential jazz artist, always deeply engaged in the moment and breathing life into the music. Adam is an active teacher and performer, playing a wide variety of drum set and percussion musical genres including jazz, Brazilian, reggae, middle eastern, funk, rock, blues, and klezmer. Together, each musician enhances the other and helps create music alive and new.

I always enjoy Jazz under the Stars and I really appreciate all the hard work Karen does for this event. She arrives really early to secure a spot for the group. Also, she lent me her blanket, it was rather chilly.

Sorry to hear that Lew. I had a Mountaineers Logo sign on the main steps next to where we were sitting up front. I kept looking for faces as people were coming in. Maybe next time I'll leave my cell number on the site. Karen

I'm laying out a blanket and some chairs to secure a spot. I'll be looking for people coming in. And I'll have a mediuml Mountaineer Logo sign next to the stairs. It's not a really big area. See you there Sheryl!
