Come enjoy the sights, lights and sounds of an old fashioned Bavarian Christmas in the town of Leavenworth. Located in eastern Washington, Leavenworth is known for it’s breath taking mountains and hospitality in town.
We will be meeting at the AAA Office at 7:30am. The bus ride comes with a light breakfast served on-board as we get underway.
The bus arrives at Leavenworth about 10:30am. We will have the town to ourselves for about 2 hours. This would be a good time to look around in the shops and maybe find some unique holiday gifts for family and friends, or just look for ideas. We may grab a bite to eat around noon. There are many restaurants there to warm up in or bring your own lunch and we’ll sit together.
There are also horse driven sleigh rides along Icicle River for about $25. The sleigh ride van stops in town every ½ hour at the Chevron station on Main St. to take you to the farm for the rides. Bring your cell phones so we can stay connected.
Then at 12:30 the Christmas Train arrives from Seattle and the town is bombarded with about 500+ people! It’s at this time that some of us can go snowshoeing or just walking (weather pending) in Icicle Park located behind the town about 5 blocks away.
Then the official Christmas Tree Lighting in the center of town happens about 4:30pm and all the buildings on Main street are lit ceremoniously as well.
Leavenworth is surrounded by mountains and it can get very cold, especially when the sun goes down! Average daytime temperature Dec. 3rd is 32 degrees. Bring a warm coat, hiking boots if you have them, wool socks, hats, gloves, and a small backpack to carry water, snacks, etc. For those willing, you can bring snowshoes and hiking poles. Snow gear, backpacks and packages can be stored in the cargo areas under the bus.
We will return to Tacoma the same day at about 9pm.
