FABULOUS VIEWS FROM RIVER SCENE TRAIL, GREAT BEACH AREA AND SCENIC TRAILS ALONG THE MERAMEC RIVER!
This route depends on the number of dogs and number of other people hiking that day, but I would like to walk the Lone Wolf Trail up the hill to the top of the bluffs, then back down the 198 steps (shown above) There will be some hills to climb but we can pace ourselves. Other than UP to the bluffs and BACK DOWN again, it's all level ground
UPDATE: River is flooded, the 198 steps and the trail shown above are closed, due to high water.
PLAN B.....Forget the 198 steps, they're closed, due to flooded Meramec. We'll still meet at the same parking lot, just past the creek on the left. The road beyond the RR tracks and all trails along the river are closed. We'll hike up the River Scene Trail to the top of the bluffs for a look at the river, which should be really cool, then back down the Lone Wolf trail to the creek, then back to the parking lot. If the creek isn't too high, we can cross it (and let the dogs play in the water) and follow the trail up the other side, about 1/2 mile longer.
We can split up at the creek, if you don't want to cross. Might bring dry shoes/socks, if you plan to wade across.
Either way, the hike will be a little shorter than planned, a little under 3 miles. Still a lot of level, but one big hill up, and one big hill down. We'll take it easy on the way up, so don't worry.
I love Castlewood, but it can get very muddy sometimes, so we'll have to watch the weather, and dress accordingly.
The other issue that I have with Castlewood is that it can get very crowded. I hike there at least once a week with just me & Sissy, but please use your head here. If you have a dog that is just learning, please limit yourself to one dog per human. Bring a friend along to help you with multiple dogs.
We'll meet at the big parking lot on the left, just after you cross the creek and before you go under the RR tracks. Bathroom facilities there, and the dogs can drink from the creek.
