CASTLEWOOD "CREEK RAT DOGS", our easiest & coolest summer hike up the cool creek

OUR EASIEST & COOLEST SUMMER HIKE.

****PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE HIKE DESCRIPTION!*****

More of a play day in the water than a hike.  Just a way to get our pups outside for some fun.  Good in the HOTTEST weather!   YOU WILL BE WADING IN THE CREEK, wear appropriate shoes.

Your shoes and your dog will be wet, that's the idea.

The walk from the cars to the creek, up along the creek on the trail, then back down the middle of the creek in the water, then back to the cars (at the beach) will be about 3 miles.  Mostly shaded, TOTALLY LEVEL and lots of time in the waters of the cold, spring fed creek.

AS ALWAYS, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT GOES ON, GO TO OUR "CALENDAR" TAB  (on our homepage)  AND CHECK PREVIOUS HIKES TO THIS LOCATION.  We had 3 trips here in July, and we take lots of pictures.

Allow 2 hours for this, it's about play time!  You can stay longer and swim in the river, if you want to.  Current is down and it's plenty safe to swim.

DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON SHORT LEASH!  Maybe some free time when we're IN THE CREEK, but not on trail.  Some mountain bikers, but not too bad.  Lots of dogs/people here.  You have to control your dog in this park, it's very crowded and they're very strict!

As always, limit of 2 DOGS PER PERSON

********************

WE HIT THE TRAIL PROMPTLY AT 10:00, arrive a little early.

***********************

SEED TICKS are out, FRONTLINE YOUR DOG.

You might want sunscreen, creek is in full sun.

Secure phone/car keys/cameras in ziplock bags!

About 3 miles, allow 2 hours.  We goof off a lot .

IMPORTANT....COME TO THE RIGHT PARKING LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

We meet at the BEACH PARKING LOT, all the way at the end of the road past the RR tracks.  There are shaded spots on the right, by the picnic tables, just before the main parking lot, which is in full sun.

Be kind to your dog, PARK IN THE SHADE, not in the main parking lot, YOUR CAR WILL BE HOT WHEN WE FINISH.  Don't put Fido into an oven for the ride home!

AFTER THE MAIN HIKE, WE GO TO THE BEACH FOR MORE PLAY TIME.

You can swim in the river here after the hike WITH your dog.   Dogs are not too welcome in the main beach area (it's pretty crowded), but we walk up the river to a very quiet spot to play.  You can skip this part and go home, if you want to, but we have a lot of fun here.  Beach is mostly sand.  CURRENT IS DOWN, GOOD SWIMMIN' FOR DOGS AND PEOPLE.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

The mapping feature at the top of the page is very good, if you need a road map.  You can access this park from Manchester Road or from Hwy 141 to Big Bend to Ries Road.  WE MEET AT THE BEACH PARKING LOT!  Once inside the park, drive ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE ROAD to the beach area.

We lose people all the time here because they go to the wrong lot.

If you have questions, ask before the time of the hike, my cell phone is in my backpack at hike time.

NO RETRACTABLE LEASHES. Short leash only.  Keep your dog on leash.

BATHROOMS AT THE PARKING LOT, but they're kinda nasty.

NO PUBLIC WATER, BRING SOME TO DRINK.

FRONTLINE (or equivalent) YOUR DOG, the ticks are out.

Be prepared to get wet, you and your dog.

And, we have the pictures to prove it. You have 2 wonderful little pups there, Bev. It was an absolute joy to have them along and I hope that we see a lot more of you.

Totally my fault, Ripon. I gave you the wrong street name to turn. I'll be sure to wait for you the next time.

GREAT DAY IN THE CREEK! We had several "newbies" and 3 wee pups learned to swim for the first time. Thanks to all of our hikers and their great dogs for a very, very enjoyable morning. Good lunch at The Wolf afterwards, too.

Big group already and not sure I want to look after both dogs on this one, especially since Bruce's recall is practically non existent when it comes to me :) We'll catch up next time!

We will miss you. You're just spoiled by JUNEBUG, who is so well behaved, even though she can't hear a thing! BRUCE is a good boy...just a guy!

If it's cool enough, we can all go to Senior Pique's mexican restaurant at Manchester/Ries Road (about 3 miles from the park) for lunch with our dogs. Looks like we might get good temps, but there's not a lot of shade there, only umbrellas

Not sure if Rosie would actually cross the creek, and I'd hate to find out on this hike! We'll have to go by ourselves sometime so I can see if I can coax her through.

There are a couple of deeper holes that the dogs can go to, if they want to, but most of the walk is in 2" to 4" of water. Also a lot of gravel banks, but she will have to wade through the water in a couple of spots. That's what helps to keep them cool on hot days, we can do this hike in 100 degree weather. If she totally refuses to get her feet wet, you can always take her back on the trail that parallels the creek on dry ground.

If Sally can do this hike, trust me any dog can do this hike!

Do we walk mostly in the water? Just wondering so I can pick the right shoes.

    July 27, 2014

You will be in the water for 1/2 hour or more. The route is described in the hike description. We do walk IN THE CREEK, so wear water appropriate shoes, or old tennis shoes that can get wet.

Wanted to let you know that we took Xena back there for a solo lesson last week and am happy to say that she is now officially a swimmer!

It doesn't take long in the summer heat, they learn quickly that it feels really good.
