We are tandem riders. Having fun, enjoying fellowship, riding back-roads, and enjoying the best life has to offer. Come join us on some rides you will remember. We are primarily a tandem bicycle club with members from the Carolinas. Twelve months a year we have rides and events, some one-day, others multi-day. When not doing a TWTC ride many of our members like to participate in tandem rallies, weekend get-a-ways and other major cycling events held throughout the USA. We welcome all riders of tandems as well as single bike couples that are interested in learning how a tandem can bring your relationship closer while making friends and having the fun. We believe the social aspect of tandeming is an important part of cycling. Even if you and your partner don’t have a tandem to start come join us make new friends and enjoy the ride.
Some of you have already gotten this email through the Afton Village Riders email list. You will get updates re: Girona on THIS specific list henceforth.
Anyone wanting to be removed from this list, just let me know. Fellow TWTC friends:
Dolores and I are going to Spain in late Sept or early Oct 2015 to cycle in the Girona/Costa Brava vicinity.
This is very preliminary - but we have decided we will take on the logistics of renting a villa, doing the research on dealing with meals, identifying routes by level of difficulty, and single-bike rentals. While I just said this is "very" preliminary, I should also note that - in order to get exactly what we want in the way of a villa at the time we want it - will mean committing some time in December.
The general parameters are something like this:
* 1 week's stay; late Sept or early Oct
* 6-20 people
* (roughly) between $500 - $750 per person for a very nice villa with a pool.
* plus share of car(s) rental costs (about $300 per car/per week)
* plus share of in-house meals (groceries &/or having some/all catered?)
* Round trip air fare: Charlotte to Barcelona is about $1,500 per person right now
* We probably DO NOT have the capacity to have bikes transported between the airport & Girona; bikes can be taken on the train but we would need to see if there are requirements/restrictions on tandems.
* very decent single bikes can be rented at a really good shop in Girona.
We have ridden in the Girona/ Costa Brava vicinity and loved it. The riding is very Tuscany like & also similar to the Hotel Dory terrain (if you've been to either). The weather in early fall is warm (not hot) and the climate is arid & sunny. There is a mountain range that lies between Girona & the Mediterranean Sea & it is very challenging. There is also a mountain range west of Girona & while we haven't ridden it, it looks challenging from topos. Coastal riding is more rolling while riding in the interior due west, south, and northeast of Girona is easier. Villas are available either near Girona, between Girona & the sea, or on the Med. The trade offs are: some (small) city-life, versus being sea-side, vs a short drive to either. Riding in the Pyrenees involves transportation to & from but is doable.
This will be a great time!
