Sabino-Bear-Seven Falls Loop, Sabino Canyon, Tucson

I enjoyed this loop so much last year that I'm going to do it again.  This is a little over 19 miles for the hike with climbs and decents that can be steep/loose and require route finding skills in some areas.  This trail descriptions are linked below and encircle Thimble Peak (exerpted from hikearizona.com); Thimble Peak can be added if we choose for an additional 1-2 miles.  This hike posting is suited for advanced, highly self-sufficient hikers...please refer to the Hiker's Notice below.

After following the trail leading to the Bear Canyon TH for 1.6 miles we will use the Phoneline Trail to reach the Sabino Canyon Trail. From the Sabino Canyon Trail we will follow the East Fork to the West and meet with the Bear Canyon Trail to reach the Falls and finish the loop. Please refer to the following pages for more information:

Trail Specs:

Distance: About 19-20 miles round-trip

Elevation: About 4000 ft total in gain/loss

Hiker's Notice: This is a long-distance hike-at-your-own-risk hike that is not trip leader led i.e. I will not be sweeping trail and hikers are responsible for themselves. Hikers will be required to know the route and the trail junctions (before the hike) and will be separated into appropriate vehicles depending on projected trail pace.

Hiking skills: Hikers should be accustomed to open desert hiking and exposed trail. Boulder hopping skills needed and able to read/follow posted signage for trail.

What to bring*: Four (4) liters of water, snacks/lunch, sunscreen, and a hat. *These are only suggestions and each hiker is responsible for being prepared for the hike themselves.

Fees: There is a $5 parking fee or your Interagency Pass (i.e. pass into the Grand Canyon) can be used.

Carpool: We will meet at the designated meeting location noted above at 6:30 am to arrange the carpool and depart by 6:45 am traveling south via Florence.  Starting this year my hikes will require everyone to be prepared to drive and to have cash for gas money.  Far too many peope have taken adantage of those who drive regularly for it to continue.  Carpool drivers set their own costs for driving so be sure to check with your driver before agreeing to carpool.

Driving directions:

From Phoenix: Take the I-10 East to Tucson. You have two options:  1. Exit on Ina and drive east.  Ina will turn into Sunrise and continue driving east.  At the intersection with Sabino Canyon take a left and a quick right into the parking lot.  2.  Exit Grant and drive east.   Continue east until you reach Sabino Canyon and take a left.  Continue north until you pass Sunrise and the parking lot is on your right.

From the East Valley: Take the US 60 east to the junction for Florence.  Take a right and take SR-77 through Florence till it ends at Oracle.  Take a right and follow Oracle to Ina and take a left. Ina will turn into Sunrise and continue driving east.  At the intersection with Sabino Canyon take a left and a quick right into the parking lot.

This such a great hike! So glad we did this when we did, with the snow on trail and the high flow in the creek. Great job Lisa.

Go figure! I spent the last two weekends down there trying to figure out what to do, and this weekend I'm staying in Phoenix and a group goes down... :-/ If you want a place to crash, you can stay at Mark's if you feed the cat. :-) :-)
