The next in a series of training hikes for Grand Canyon will be held this Saturday. We'll tackle a tough loop through the northern McDowells. This is a strenuous hike of about 8.5 miles with combined elevation gain of about 2,700 ft. Scenery includes a distant view of north Scottsdale, McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and the wildflowers should be blooming by now.
We'll start from the new Toms Thumb trailhead, take the steep Toms Thumb Trail to its namesake landmark for a brief visit. Then we descend the remainder of the Toms Thumb Trail to Windgate Pass Trail. Climb a mild slope to Windgate Pass, then loop back around on the challenging East End Trail and descend Toms Thumb Trail back to the parking lot.
Weather should be perfect for this hike with a high of 80. Expect to be out for 4-5 hours.
