TIME: Wednesdays 6:00 - 6:50 P.M. INFO: Qigong (pronounced “chee gong”) is Chinese yoga and meditation that involves gentle but surprisingly effective ways of moving and caring for the mind and body. It uses low-impact exercises drawn from Daoism, Buddhism, traditional Chinese health practices, and Asian martial arts traditions. We begin with simple warm-up exercises and then do various movement forms to stretch and condition the body. The practices we do can make you sweat, but they can be also be modified and done in ways that are softer on the body. The class is appropriate both for beginners and for more experienced qigong practitioners. Please try to arrive a few minutes early. Enter through the double doors on the south side of the main building, leave your shoes on the shelves in the entranceway, and then proceed downstairs to our practice space. This class is led by Steven Geisz. Steve is a Certified Full Instructor in the Healing Tao qigong system of Mantak Chia, a student in the multi-year qigong-teacher-training program of Ken Cohen, and a 500-hour registered yoga teacher (RYT 500). There is no charge for this class, but donations to the Florida Community of Mindfulness (FCM) are gratefully accepted. All are welcome, regardless of ability to contribute.
Wednesday Evening Meditations for Mindful Living We aspire to enjoy our life and our relationships with others. To be fully present to ourselves and those around us and to live life with ease and awareness. Yet, we often find that our daily life is just opposite. Lost in our thoughts and our personal dramas, we miss the beauty and simplicity of our life and relationships. Instead of enjoying the roses in life, we remain lost the endless spinning of our minds. We need to transform how we relate to life and mindfulness is a powerful tool to accomplish this goal. It will facilitate a profound shift that will enable us to stabilize our minds, meaningfully ground ourselves in everyday reality and can be used to heal the psycho-emotional wounds that we may carry within us from our past. The practice of mindfulness, of learning how to be fully present, focused and aware of what’s going on in and around us right now, is the practice that allows this transformation to occur. Wednesday evening meditations for mindful living, based on the wonderful teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and the Plum Village tradition, are designed to help us build a daily life that is grounded and stable with greater clarity and ease. Every Thursday evening from 7:15 to 9:00 pm in the Tampa practice center meditation hall (please try to arrive about 10 minutes early). Enter and remove your shoes in the Meditation Hall foyer. Enter the Meditation Hall quietly and settle in. Our teacher Fred leads this weekly extended evening meditation, which is open to all. The evening will consist of two 35-minute sitting meditation periods, with formal walking meditation in-between. These extended meditation periods offer students the opportunity to deepen their practices of mindfulness, concentration and insight. While meditation is occurring Fred offers private interviews in the Center's downstairs Interview Room to FCM members (those who have become Fred’s students) - please visit Membership for more information. Interviews are conducted in the Zen “dokusan" tradition – going alone to visit the teacher. No advance sign-up occurs for interviews; instead, students line up at the back of the meditation hall and the personal interviews unfold, one following the other, as time permits. The length of each interview may range from 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the situation. Dokusan pertains to issues that arise in the student's personal meditation practice and their life experiences of integrating the teachings into their daily life, not with intellectual or theoretical matters.
When and Where: Every Monday & Friday morning from 6:30 to 7:30 am at the Tampa practice center meditation hall. Remove your shoes in the Meditation Hall foyer (please leave phones, water and other personal items in the foyer or in your car), and come into the Meditation Hall quietly and settle in. You are welcome to join us in silence anytime between 6:30 and 7:30 am for the Sunrise Meditation, where we will sit for 30 minutes, walk for 5 minutes, and sit for another 30 minutes. The meditation will be totally in silence.
