Road/Bridge Closures

There have been a number of road and bridge closures so far this year with more in the works. I've been getting very helpful emails from folks on this. I'd like to try to use our discussion board to let ride leaders and club members know and to let all of you provide updated information as you have it.

Lystra Road: there is a sink hole blocking automobile traffic but, at last report, is passable by bicycle.

Orange Grove should, according to NCDOT, be open by now. Is that correct?

There appear to be 5 bridge projects in Orange County some of which impact routes we use regularly. I am seeing different dates being scheduled (which I have noted), probably because they are all contracted to be done by a particular date (Nov 2018) but the timing of the closures is left to the discretion of the contractor:

Compton Rd: Road Closed on 2/22/16
Hawkins Rd: Anticipated Road Closure of 3/28/16
Bradshaw Quarry Rd: Anticipated Road Closure in August 2016??
Authur Minnis between Borland and Union Grove: April 1-June 30 (or August 2017)
Borland between Authur Minnis and Kimbro: Aug 1-Oct 31 (or April 2017)

If you know of other road closures, updates on timing, more precise locations of the closures, or when closed roads are reopened, please post that on this discussion.

We wanted to remind you that the Bynum Bridge Fest and Studio tour is fast approaching. April 23rd, 10:00 - 5:00 Bynum will be alive with the arts.

I'm emailing you hoping that you might be able to help spread the word to area cyclists about an event that could impact rides planning to go through Bynum on Saturday, April 23rd. On that day, from 10 am - 5pm there will be a art festival happening on the bridge and surroundings. Cycling over the pedestrian bridge will be slow-going, and there could be some congestion in Bynum. This may deter or attract any potential cyclists that day, depending on their interest in art! Anyway, if you could help spread the word so anyone planning on a ride through Bynum on the 23rd can plan accordingly, that would be great!

Phil L. reports that repair work on Lystra Church Road in Chatham County will be complete soon. The stretch of the road on a causeway over Jordan Lake was closed in January when a sinkhole developed because of the failure of underground culverts. Recent rainfall has delayed the expected completion date of June 17. The contractor is making every effort to open the road as soon as possible, and expects it will happen by June 30. The project required the excavation of two 60-inch culvert pipes under the road and replacing them with a 12-foot diameter aluminum pipe. A 16-inch underground water line owned by Chatham County was also relocated. The road itself is also being repaired.

Phil L. reports that Lystra Road is now open. I used his report as an excuse to personally inspect the repairs (on a motorcycle. ;-) Glad to have it opened.

Ray L. reports: I drove from Carrboro to Albemarle in Stanly County this morning and found Crawford Dairy Rd was closed just west of the intersection with White Cross road. Contractors are replacing a pipe culvert. You can still get to Frosty's with a left turn from White Cross onto Crawford Dairy, but the road is closed to the right. This morning, I saw they have removed the asphalt and you could walk across but I bet by later today, the road will be gone.

And Ray reports that yes, that road is really closed:

Pipe Replacement Will Detour Drivers on Old N.C. 86 in Orange County

N.C. Department of Transportation maintenance crews must close a section of Old N.C. 86 between Eubanks Road and Homestead Road near Chapel Hill in Orange County to replace an aging pipe that crosses underneath the roadway.

In its place will be two larger pipes. Crews will close the road at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 19. It is scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 7, weather permitting.

Motorists traveling through the area will be detoured onto Eubanks Road, Rogers Road and Homestead Road.

Transportation officials advise drivers to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.

EFLAND (NC DOT News Release) – N.C. Department of Transportation contractors will begin work Monday, Jan. 29, replacing the Bradshaw Quarry Road bridge that crosses Cane Creek between Buckhorn Road and Orange Grove Road in Efland.

“Built in 1956, the existing bridge no longer meets the demands of the traffic using it and has reached the end of its life cycle,” said NCDOT Division Engineer Mike Mills.

A portion of the road will close from 7 a.m. on Monday until work is complete in June. Local traffic will still be able to access locations on either side of the bridge up to the point of closure.

Eastbound and westbound traffic will be able to detour around the closure using Buckhorn Road, Chesnut Ridge Road, Borland Road, Orange Grove Road and Bradshaw Quarry Road.

This project is part of the department’s overall bridge program to improve the condition of the state’s bridges and ensure the safety of drivers who rely on them.

NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit.
